Why is my SD card no longer recognized?

My tablet suddenly stopped recognizing my SD card today for no reaason. I have tried removing it and placing it back in but the device fails to recognize any change. Would I have to format my device?

The problem may not be related to the device. At first, I would try to reformat the SD card using a computer program as SD cards tend to get corrupted a lot of the time.
