Boot regularly from firewire port? / Repeated SATA Cable Failure
Hello all,
Brief history:
- 03/14 sluggish, failed to recognize hard drive. Could not boot. Replaced SATA cable, worked better than new!
- 04/14 upgraded to SSD Crucial drive 6Gb/s (have read this thread: Why is my computer crashing after I installed my SSD?
- 07/14 randomly failed to recognize hard drive. Tested drive was normal using external USB dock. IFixit sent new cable, worked beautifully!
- 03/15 randomly failed and could not recognize hard drive.
I know that both my old drive (original from MBP) and my new crucial SSD work fine, I can boot them externally. I am suspicious that jostling of the cable / daily movement back and forth to school is damaging it. I have included two pictures showing my install and a dent in the back of my case right over where the drive is:
Question 1: any thoughts on why these perfectly new ifixit SATA cables are continuing to fail again and again?
Question 2: I'm ready to give up on using it as a laptop and (potentially avoid damaging the cable again??) leave it as a desktop using my original optical hard drive. Has anyone tried regularly permanently booting from a device like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20W... through a firewire cable?
Thank you all!
Best,
Kevin

Thank you Mayer, I appreciate your input.
Two questions: is there any way you could send a picture of how you secure the drives so I can get an idea of how it looks when I try it?
Also: do you have any thoughts/experience on booting permanently from a firewire HDD enclosure like the one I have linked to above?
Thanks,
Kevin

I'll take pictures of the next one I do and post it. As to permanently booting from a firewire, just go to System preferences > Startup Disk and select it.
