lcd assembly or just glass replacement

Hey guys, I've been kinda running my own repair business on the side for a couple weeks now just ordering a lcd assembly whenever someone has a screen they need replaced. After seeing how many people need screens replaced I realized that I could make some decent cash doing this but I had a few questions. Right now whenever I have a customer I have to order the screen for them and wait a week or so for it to be delivered and then install it and get paid. I soon realized that if I wanted to really make some money I need to keep screens in stock to be able to preform same day repairs so that brought me to the decision to order a lcd glass cutting machine hoping that just keeping glass screens would be cheaper to ordered in bulk vs whole screen assembly. So I guess my question is am I right that it's easier to make your own screens with the lcd machine and should i dish out alot of cash for a machine to allow me to do oca repairs? Also on iphone 5's I see a lot of people removing the back light. Do you really have to do that. I apologize for the long post but just some questions I've had on my mind. Thanks in advance!

I talk to hundreds of people in the repair industry every day. Nearly everyone who goes down this road regrets it.

People do LOCA for Samsung devices and some other Android devices, but the quality iPhone assemblies are around $40 and are quick and easy to install. Nobody does OCA due to the upfront start up costs. You have to decide what your core business is. If you want to be the guy with 10k of OCA equipment then great--go around to the other local shops and see if you can refurbish their screens for them.

There are only a handful of people that do OCA in house and run a general repair business. And most of those guys invested in the technology because they are running monster big stores.

Advice--just buy your iPhone screen assemblies. Learn to do out of frame LOCA for Android devices, and do a ton of research on this. practice on dead screens.

In our case, for Apple iPhones and iPads it is always better cost/benefit wise to use the LCD / glass combo parts because of the relatively low cost. The time needed to change the glass on an LCD is long and also much more risky then just using a combo part.

For Android devices (such as Samsung Galaxy), the LCD is much more expensive and hard to find. In these cases, you often need to change the glass to be able to recuperate the LCD.

As a rule of thumb, if it is an Apple product, use the combo screen assemblies. If it is an Android device, for Samsung you change the glass, Nexus has good affordable combo screen parts also.

Sounds like your growing...maybe into a nice business down the road. But don't forget to factor into your business plan a very important question....."How many times do I expect a paying customer to inconvenient their day and bring back their phone to fix something you repaired?" Im sure your reputation stands behind your products/ repairs? It's all about the quality. Treat your customers with the best.....and your business will explode! Good luck...

Where would you recommend buying the whole assembled product at? I usually buy on eBay for about 30 for 5s,5c,and 5 and 20 for the 4/4s. If I order 5 screen in both black and white it ends up being pretty expensive vs when I can make a screen from a broken one when I need it for maybe 6 or 7 bucks.
