MacBook Pro partially booting up but freezing.

Hey

I recently bought a used macbook pro 13" mid 2010. The device does not boot of a bootable usb that I created of OS X Yosemite using a perfectly functioning 2011 macbook pro. Ive tried holding down the option key, it detects the usb and starts to boot but just stops when the loading bar underneath the apple logo gets near a quarter of the way.

Ive also performed a fresh install of OS X Yosemite on the hard drive its self using a usb enclosure on my 2011 macbook pro, and that device boots of the hard drive using the usb enclosure but the 2010 macbook pro does not boot up nomatter if the drive is internal or external. I get the same result, the apple logo and the load bar stuck about a quarter of the way.

Ive also attempted to install windows 7 on the drive using boot camp, but that only places the install files on the external drive. Then I placed the drive into the 2010 macbook pro and it starts the windows installer and works fine for a few minutes then it freezes.

I am thinking it could be the SATA cable but if it was the SATA cable wouldn't it boot when the drive is external?

Could it be the firmware restricting it from booting up from the drive when it's external? Should I try and older version of OS X?

Or should I just sell it and not waste my time?
