The factory method is to use a lubricant made by Dow Corning

Called number 55 O ring lubricant. If you don't have that then a couple dabs of wheel bearing grease will work. If the O-ring (quad seal) swelled up so much it doesn't fit in the groove anymore then clean it off let it dry off in the sun and see if it contracts. If it doesn't, get a new quad seal . Oil makes rubber expand so that's what causes the seal to pop out of the groove. Then tighten the screws evenly around the derby cover til its tight.

It tends to stay in place in the Derby cover, but a smear of oil helps it stick. If still an issue with this or other that needs to stay in place temporarily, such as wheel spacers that tend to fall out when replacing wheel etc, use thin coating of Permatex High Tack Gasket Sealer or similar following directions on can.
