My MacBook Pro 17 freezes and lines in screen!

Hi I have lines on my macbook pro 17 screen, my graphic card is not the 8600, I heard that Installing Computer Thermal Paste on graphic heat sink can be the answer: How to Apply Thermal Paste

But it does not say how to get to the heat sink, any one knows how dissemble to get to it?

Or any one knows how to fix the problem?

Thanks

If the lines are horizontal across the screen it isn't a problem with the graphics card. you most likely have a faulty ram module. start by removing 1 card at a time then rebooting. if you still have the same problem replace the card that you removed and take out the other one. the problem should go away after you have removed the faulty card. Just another quick question; do the lines appear as soon as you turn on the computer or do they come after you pass through the apple boot loading screen? if the don't come until after the apple leaves and you get to the login screen or your desktop, then the ram is definitely your problem.

Hope I was of some help

Thank you darrenbugeja, the lines I have is horizontal and about ,2mm thin, I have printscreen of the lines but I am newbe here and cannot find how to attach a pic here, but you can see a pic about the problem in this link: http://forum.macworld.se/topic/117090-sm...

I took of the two ram completely and put a 2GB ram but the problem is still there.

The lines comes after I log in, they comes and goes in a diffrent places in the screen, please see the link a bove to see what I mean.

Hi...

Please verify that you put in the correct type of ram for your machine.... the correct type is PC2-5300.

No other type of ram will work correctly and will cause horizontal lines and freezing... Also I was not able to view your link as the page is not in english.

tarafından

The ram is DDR2GBSO5300, KINGSTON KTA MB667/2G 1.8V, AND ON THE OTHER SIDE IT SAYS ICEmemory AP-MBD2667-G02 2GB, 094106

tarafından

I now changed the ram to test and put 2x512MB hynix 2RX16 PC2-5300S-555-12, and its still the same problem.

The link upp there is in swedish, but you can see the pictures any way, or do you mean that you did not see the pics?

If so, can you plz say how to uppload the pics here or I can send them to you by e-mail if I can have your e-mail adress

Thought I might also add that if the lines you are experiencing are vertical then you have a much larger problem on your hands. The problem then is most likely the graphics card and or some other graphics related component that lies on the motherboard. Either way you cannot repair this type of problem without replacing your entire logic board. If you are experiencing this type of problem (vertical lines and freezing) I would start by taking it to a local AUTHORIZED apple repair center NOT AN APPLE STORE and have them take a look at it. They will most likely complete the repair for you free of charge under the active hardware extension program that's in place for the A1151 graphics card even though you said that you dont have a unit hat qualifies under the recall.... Let me know how you make out.....

Please start your own question. Your machine does not have the same parts as the MacBook Pro. Thanks I see you've put this same answer in on three different questions and that Apple solved the problem but you never said what they did.

install smcfancontrol, use the higher rpm and cool your mac ... the problem is heating.... smcfancontrol helps your mac with that.

the problem may still there but you don't see it any more because of the lower temperature of the macbook...

Hi, having random lines or artifacts with freezing especially on a macbook pro or imac with an ATI x1600 is either a graphics chip fault or a video ram fault.

I know this for a fact as i repair these all the time.

Hi guys - having some issues with a MacBook Pro 17". I see there's some actual pros on this thread.

The MacBook boots up just fine and has no lines during the splash screen with the Apple. I can Option in and boot from DVD no problem, and I've been able to reset the PRAM using the Ctrl + Opt + R + P. I cannot, however, get into the Apple Hardware Test (using D).

Machine boots right up, but I have different patterns of horizontal lines across the desktop. Sometimes it gets right to Desktop, and sometimes I get the TPAULD (Technicolor Pinwheel of Absolute Uncertainty and Likely Doom) and eventually the screen goes black.

The machine came with a pair of 1GB DDR2 sticks. I've tried each alone in both DIMM slots, and the problem persists. Tried another stick of DDR2 (2GB 667) and the same thing happens. I'd like to rule RAM out as the problem but I suppose it's possible all the sticks are faulty. Unlikely, but possible.

Is there another means of getting a hardware test going? What would be my next step?

Thanks!

Ben

Hello there everyone, I have a A1115 MacBook Pro 17" with 2,16 Core Duo Procesor.

I`m having the same problem with the line, like in the first picture above.

I try`d removing one RAM and left the 1Gb original one and the problem stooped for like 15min and then the line appear`d again and the system hanged after. I think is tided to the Mac heating up, but i dont know if anyone has found a part fault or the video chip.

Please, can anyone tell me if they have found a solution for this.

My line is in the middle of the screen not higher on the screen like in the image.

It always shows up after the system starts up and if I go with the mouse over it, it dose not affect the mouse or any windows I drag over it.
