Smoking logic board, replace or repair?

Hi,

I was swapping out a screen assembly on an iPhone 6 and when I was trying to get the Lcd/Digitizer etc. connectors plugged in there was a little bit of smoke coming from the board. I haven't been able to get the screen working since then. I also have some slightly bent FPC connectors, which could also be the problem. The phone is still recognized by the computer, so the data should be safe at least. Is this a repair or replace situation in your opinion? I'm trying to avoid the ATM fix. Thanks.

Brandon

That's sucks!! I'm sorry to hear that. Im not sure the answer myself. Did you disconnect the battery when you were doing the repair?

Can you tell if the LCD is still turning on without the backlight?

Post an image of your connector as well as the general area of the board where the smoke came from. that way we can see what you see. Use this guide Adding images to an existing question for that

I have also had this issue and would like to find out why this has happened . Today I powered down the device before installing a new iPhone 6s screen. Turned the device on and lcd connection sparked. Phone worked with another screen but first screen attempt did not after the spark. What's the go?

On the 6s powering down the phone is not enough, you need to disconnect the battery at screen swap. The 6s has a very sensitive backlight circuit. You'll need to have the backlight circuit repaired at board level.

Was your phone still on while doing the repair? This could have caused the smoke, but hopefully not permanent damage. Always remember to fully power down the device you're fixing.

First things first, double check your work. Go back, and look over what you repaired. Your screen could be malfunctioning because of something simple. Disconnect and reconnect the LCD and digitizer, and make sure nothing is pinched, broken, or disconnected. If the problem persists, I would be inclined to say back up your device and replace the board. I'm not entirely sure why the board would be smoking, but it likely isn't easily repairable.

Let me know what happens! I'm interested in why the board was smoking.
