My son closed his computer and the headphone jack got caught between the screen and case.
The screen is not cracked or broken but now the screen is gray with vertical and horizontal lines on it.
Is this a screen replacement thing or a logic board/controller issue?

Ouch!
You'll need to replace the display. What happened here is the tiny etched wires in the display got damaged when the glass flexed.

I ordered the new screen from ifixit yesterday at 1100 hrs, it arrived today at 1300 hrs, and my son fixed his Macbook Pro in 45 minutes following the break-down instructions.
