5s wont boot up, error 4005

So after fixing the battery and lightning port on my Iphone 5s i cant turn it on.

I have a feeling that its not even charging.

So i hooked it up to my laptop to try and restore it using itunes. After downloading the software it started recovery. Suddenly the display lit up and i saw the apple logo on a black screen. That was as far as i got, it kept saying waiting on iphone in itunes and after a while i got error 4005.

Somebody told me to try it without lcd but that wouldn't work either.

any suggestions?

I had the same... and a technician told me that most of the time it is due to a faulty "cheek detector" the one that turns off the screen when taking the phone to the ear. I worked right on the minute he changed it.

Had same problem on iPhone 5. Changing lightning connector card did not fix. Was not fixed by dr.fhone (was stupid to buy it). In the end managed to get it running by disconnecting the camera (first cable you disconnect if you remove the screen). Had the phone plugged to the computer (in restore mode), disconnected the camera, and then started restore in itunes. Lost no data. Phone memory was full which might be the reason it could not update the ios (?)

Your phone is auto-booting itself into DFU mode.

Can you tell us more about how that began?

It sounds like you've tried conventional restore and are getting error 4005. To me, this seems really similar to error 27--which I'm starting to see a lot. Phones that will suddenly start auto-booting into recovery and fail iTunes update. That seems like a flash memory problem.

Error 4005 seems very similar, but it could be just due to a dropped usb connection. Assuming you've ruled out the common advice---changing cables, trying different machines, then I would probably change the U2 chip on the board, and then call it a day.

Errror 4005 is that there is a problem with the memory chip.

the way to fix this is to apply heat to the A5 chip. as there error 4005 is related to no serial number. no serial number = no restore

its just like trying to make a call from a phone with no imei number

Why apply heat to the chip, can that fix the problem? can you tell me that?

Error 4005 is that the chip has come away from the mother board.

It's the same as the PS3 yellow light of death

how do i get a serial number?

The iPhone 5s has a A7 chip, not a A5. A5 was the 4S, back when shields were removable :)

Nick,

I believe the reason you are getting error 4005 on your iphone 5S when restoring through iTunes is because you have iCloud backup enabled. Try this!

  1. 1) Disconnect your device from your computer.
  2. 2) Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes installed and that all of your drivers are up to date.
  3. # 2a) If you have to upgrade iTunes to the latest version restart your computer after the install has finished.
  4. 3) Open itunes and allow it to load all the way
  5. 4) Connect your device in recovery mode.
  6. # 4a) Power the iPhone off
  7. # 4b) Press and hold the home button while plugging in the USB cable.
  8. # 4c) Wait to release the home button until you see "Connect to iTunes" illustration displayed.
  9. 5) Wait for the device drivers to load on your system and for iTunes to recognize your device.
  10. 6) Once iTunes has recognized your device select restore from the presented options.
  11. 7) Wait for the process to complete!
  12. 8) Reconnect your device through iTunes.
  13. 9) Restore from iCloud backup

This should work. If it does not and you have a Windows based PC then try this...

#1) Close iTunes

  1. #1a) If you are using a windows system don't forget to also close iTunes through the system tray icon as iTunes is sometimes allowed to run in the background.
  2. 2) Disconnect your Device from the computer
  3. 3) Go to Control Panel
  4. 4) Go to Programs
  5. 5) Go to Programs and Features
  6. 6) Select Apple Mobile Device Support and click repair
  7. 7) Connect iPhone to computer USB (device should install automatically)
  8. 8) Open iTunes
  9. 9) When prompted, click restore iPhone
  10. 10) iOS should install now and restore your device to Factory Settings

Thank you for your answer but the problem is a little bit deeper.

I cant seem to turn it on at all!! the only time i get some response out of it is when i plug it in and try to restore it. (it shows the apple logo just before i get the message waiting on iphone). there is simply no other way to turn it on and it'll just get stuck again.

could this be something else ?

Wow, good answer Dave Adams. I didn't know any of that. Well, I guess if that isn't working, and you're still getting black screen. Try a force restart

thats a good tut, but im still thinking the problem is cause by the fact that i cannot charge it, nor turn it on or anything...

Well, is it off, or is it that you just can't see it working?

I had the same problem (although, the circumstances preceding it were not the same as OP's). I was eventually able to get it back working.

While using it, my 5s suddenly shut down without any reason (didn't drop it, overheat it, etc). It was almost on a full charge at the time. I tried everything to get it to power back on, nothing worked. Hard reset, or connecting the wall charger (and leaving it connected for hours) had absolutely no effect. Calling my own number went straight to voicemail. The phone literally looked 100% dead.

Connecting it to iTunes offered a glimpse of hope: iTunes detected an iPhone in recovery mode, offered to Restore it. OK, so it's not "dead"-dead, after all. Halfway through recovery, the screen turns on showing the Apple logo (on black background). Encouraging. "Waiting for iPhone" , and a few minutes later - error 4005. Bummer. Rinse and repeat. Reconnect USB, go through the iTunes restore steps again. Tried this probably 20 times, on 3 PC's with 3 different Lightning cables. Same error 4005. Clearly this is going nowhere. It's either a hardware failure, or comatose software.

Last resort - a "true" power cycle. I pry open the case, disconnect the battery connector, reconnect it a few seconds later, and press the Power button. Lo and behold. The phone powers up, and the data on it is unchanged. It simply works again.

I haven't got a clue as to what caused the problem in the first place. I'm not excluding a hardware failure, but the phone's been running just fine since then (almost a week now), so it could've been a software issue? (granted, software issues may arise as mere symptoms of actual hardware defects)

Anyway, worth a shot...

i already fixed mine by reheating the u2/a5 chip. its an hardware issue not software.

@Jojo, is there a tutorial how to do this, how you reheat the u2 and a5 chip, open cover/case and directly heating the components, what are you using to heat the u2 and a5?

Or without opening the case?

Thanks

I put some alloy around baseband cover (metal cover). Reflowed using Hakko 850 smd rework system with settings: Air 5, Heat 6. Took off the two chips, cleaned the lead residue using wick , then reballed mounting board (used microscope), placed the new two chips, then flashed updated the firmware.

tarafından

I reheated by leaving the EMI shield's in place and put under the oven grill for exactly 3 mins! Worked like a charm!

Hi, I know its been a long time, but now I got exactly the same problem that you, Niels. Did you solve the problem reflowing NAND, and possibly U2 chip? Thanks a lot

I solve it to, but not by my self, i bring it to Apple-Store and the people from support make a system recovery with the newest version.

And i ask them what is a difference to my try's that i make at home? And they say that sometimes windows with anti-virus make problems and the system update wont complete and bring Error 4005.

And if i ask, why that problem starts anyway, they mean, that there was a problem with previous system update, that was not complete and that was the reason why my 5s is going to recovery mode.

But now it works very fine without change anything on the hardware :D

Best regards

In some cases, replacing the battery can fix the iTunes error 4005. The main problem is because the battery have a low power. i recommend you to replace with a original battery.
