Why won't my iPod appear on my itunes screen?

After dropping my ipod in water, I immediately fished it out, dried it off and put it in rice for 2 days. THen it seemed to worked, albeit sluggishly and with a dim screen, for 2 days, during which I used it quite a bit. Then suddenly it wouldn't work anymore. WHen I plug it ito my computer, it will not appear on itunes. If I hold down menu and center buttons simultaneously, it tries to restore but apparently doesn't. I feel clicks and whirring inside, but see nothing on the screen.

Even with the device in rice, water can hang out inside the device for a long time. The water could have shorted out any number of things, and my first advice would be to open the iPod and thoroughly dry each component with a soft cleaning cloth. These guides will get you into the device. If iTunes doesn't read it after some thorough careful drying, I would bet the problem is a damaged logic board. We are currently out of stock on logic boards for the iPod classic, but you could asked to be notified next time we have them in stock here.

Once you're at a step where you can see the logic board, you could use some strong isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush to remove any white-ish residue you see. Let the device dry thoroughly again to make sure all liquid is gone (A bag of rice can also be useful again at this point.) When it is dry, put it back together, and you will have your best chance of it working without needing to order a new logic board.

Water damage is hard to diagnose. It can effect many different components in your iPod. The dimly lit LCD probably means you have a broken LCD which houses the back light for the LCD. The issue you are having with the iPod not connecting to iTunes is probably related to your logic board. You'll probably need to replace it or buy a new iPod. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Worked for me. Before replacing the logicboard, if your ipod classic 6th generation (or any for that matter) won't sync. Try carefully cleaning all contacts on your hard drive cable and the logicboard with Ronsonol lighter fuel. Ronsonol does not leave a residue that rubbing alcohol does. I simply applied this with a cotton swab.
