How to prevent LOCA glue from entering LCD?

How can I prevent Loca glue from entering the side of the LCD (backlight) screen? I got the whole glass replacement down and the screen working, but theres is a slight discoloration in the corner of the screen, just wondering what would be the best technique to prevent the local glue from entering the backlight in future repairs. Thank you in advance for your answers.

I've been through this thread three times and still can't get it. I am one of those who learn with pictures. And man would images here be great. I didn't know about taking off the back light?!? I never heard of blue tac, what? I wonder how many LCDs I might have saved!

Could somebody try and put up some images? These posts are great to have, maybe images would just make them even more helpful...

I can just agree. I dont understand how to put bluetac onto the sides of the lcd, and how to remove (and successfully apply back) the backlight. I thought once removed it couldnt be stuck back on again?

tarafından

I'll try this again. I have poured over this thread again and still don't know what the !&&* it all means. I wish I could follow it and make sense of it, but I guess that is not meant to be . If one of you ifixit brethren could snap some photos and word your instructions like you are trying to coach a six year old, maybe I could pick-up on it and be able to save some money on LCDs. I bought specialized machines just for this purpose. They don't work very good sitting on a shelf.

Someone please, teach this idiot!

Loca glue is messy unless your buying them in sheet form then applied by machine...if you don't want glue in the backlight just remove it off the back before glueing but keep in mind it is vey delicate and in some cases people just resolder a new one.i used to do refurbishing and if you have the machines and you know the proper way to fix with no esd or particles then you can make some money.

Ok, so what machine/other equipment would I need if I was considering using the glue in sheet form instead of liquid?

tarafından

Just to save embarassment and confusion for someone that reads the first post, LOCA will never come in a sheet. Avoid confusion by not asking for it. LOCA is the acronym for Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive.......

Ask for OCA if you want to use the sheet type adhesive instead.

The best and somehow easy way to prevent the glue would be by taking the backlight film off gently, putting a thin transparent tape on the mirror of the lcd and then applying the glue. When the glue dries using UV, take of the tape clean the mirror with isopropyl and put the backlight film back carefully. Voila, no marks and u got a clean glass replacement. Please note, that to take off the backlight you will need to unsolder the three small connections first and when putting back the backlight you have to resolder them back. Not very difficult to do so, so you can give a try. And please also note, when glue goes in between the lcd you don't have to throw it away. Just remove the backlight film and clean the mirror with isopropyl or acetone. Film costs like 5$. Just be gentle and have patience.

what do you mean by glue going in between LCD? like just seeping into the backlight paper and stuff right?

tarafından

Yes that is what I meant :)

tarafından

How would you desolder it though? When soldering, my tip hardly melts the solder and it gets uncontrollable where the solder flows to etc. I've heard flux should help here, but which type? Runny, or more solid flux?

Also, will small dust particles on the backlight make a big difference later and does the backlight need to be really clean (like when applying a screen protector on your phone)?

tarafından

Once the glue goes inside then i have to replace the backlight film with new one or i can resolder the existing one after cleaning with isopropyl

tarafından

Every lcd has an unique backlight film or i can use any of same size

you may laugh at this but seriously stopped any glue spots on lcd what I did was use blue tac around edge of lcd before aligning the glass it's worked on every glass repair I've ever done and the only awkward thing I found was cutting precise sizes but roll it into a rectangle shape then use a Stanley blade to cut to size honestly try this easy to remove afterwards to ;)

Sorry but what is tac? :P

Blue tac is like sticky putty sort of but easy to remove ;)

Hey, I've bought some blue tac, but I dont exactly get what you're doing. So you apply the blue tac to the side of the lcd? And wont blue tac get in between the glass too?

Hey dude.. Just try this tips. Make sense and also its easy to do.

Prepare oca tape. (i use 5.5 inch oca tape sheet) and you can adjust the length depend what your need.

Use oca tape as sealent. cut oca tape to divided 2mm or 3mm wide (and it will be very much). Then stick on each side of lcd (side, up and bottom). It will be hold LOCA to leak on the lcd backlight.

So sticking small OCA stripes on the LCDs sides would make it more LOCA-proof? Will definately try this, thanks

I'll vouch for (and upvote) this. Recently discovered the joy of using double sided tape to mask around a laptop CPU's heat spreader and resistors (previous thermal paste job was in all the resistors). With it being clear it's easy to confirm a seal (and I had a super sticky surface to put some wider, less sticky tape down). Afterwards I had a clean dry board where nothing crept round the sides of the CPU to the solder balls so OCA masking sounds awesome to me!

Do you use mould? Can you describe it in detail?

Thanks

The machines you need to use OCA (a sheet of adhesive) would set you back a few thousand not to mention you will need a HUGE amount of space to set it up and even know you won't sail through the process.

The easiest way is to completely remove the backlight and replace it with a brand new one

LOCA will always get through unless you remove ALL uncured loca. you would be surprised how much there is that you can't see/have access to

The best way to give a good quality is using OCA instead of LOCA- but that method is gonna b expensive- coz you need autoclave vacum machin to get rid of bubbles.

So the second best way is as younis said take the back light off- but you need to make sure you are working in dust free workplace.

Or try sugru on the sides of lcd to prevent LOCA between LCD and BACKLIGHT-

If you are very good in alignment of GLASS and LCD- coz you can not use mouldy if you use sugru

The only way to apply OCA by hand is to use some kind of soft roll just like with the polarizer. Bad thing about it, you can't afford to make mistake while applying the sheet and next the glass, do so and then start over removing the glass and the applied oca shet. LOCA might be harder to work with but once you master it believe me its the best solution. As for going into the backlight, no worries, theyre cheap and easy to install and as for the dust don't worry about that either, just user some ISOPROPYL to clean the surface and even if some dust gets in its not visible at all. :)
