I have turned up the volume of the speakers as high as they will go and the speaker isn't much louder than my phone. My phones volume is all the way up, also sometimes the speaker won't respond when I adjust the volume up or down not sure if this is related.

To improve the volume of the speaker; reset the speakers to see if the volume is working well again. If the speaker is not completely responding check to see if the sound button is broken, if it is broken replace it.
