the rectangular plate under the monitor, the one with the apple symbol, can it be removed and replaced. I notice that there is a seem around it when you view the machine from the sides.

I almost certain your talking about the rear cover, Apple part number 922-9621. It's part of the main frame. Please look on the right of the following tear down:
