BenQ DVD drive won't open when metal casing is fully closed?

When the metal casing of my BenQ DVD drive is fully closed, it won't eject. If I remove the upper casing OR pull the upper casing slightly up, drive opens just fine.

To clarify, I do mean the metal casing of the DVD drive itself, not the entire console casing.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Trying again.. any solutions guys?

I'm confused. Is the DVD casing bent in front of the tray or is the tray somehow misaligned so that it runs into the case. For physical issues like this, pictures are extremely helpful.

No, it doesn't appear to be damaged in any way. Here's a link to some pictures http://picasaweb.google.com/jenavii/Unti...

I have an idea of what I think may be the problem and I'll try my best to explain. It could be the washer shaped magnet (4th pic) and the plastic piece (w/ magnet on the top casing, 5th pic) that hold the disc in place. From watching the drive open/close with out the top casing, I can see that the area with the washer shaped magnet and laser drop down.

I'm assuming that's to releases the upper plastic piece, so that it can eject properly? I'm thinking that when the casing is fully closed, the hold of the magnets is so strong, that it will not allow that are to drop down, so its not able to eject. What do you think?

It sounds like what is happening is the disk is catching on the piece that you are talking about in the fourth pic. This part moves up when the disk is loaded sandwiching the disk between it and the piece from your fifth pic., and keeping the disk clear from the tray while it spins. What seems to be happening is the part is not moving back down fully, so leaving the case partially separated allows the extra clearance needed for the tray to eject properly. I am assuming that you've taken the drive apart and have had the problem since then. Try taking it apart again and make sure that everything is in it's proper place, clean, and properly lubricated. Good luck.

I'll try putting a small piece of rubber or folded paper between the casing. Hopefully that works.

I actually bought this Xbox broken on ebay for $10. It had the e74 error, which I fixed easily. Once it started up, I realized the disc drive wouldn't open. Looking closely I can see the previous owner had the same problem, because there are small scuff marks where it seems the tried to force it open.

$10 for a gimp is a pretty good price. Again, good luck.

For Kicks and giggles try cleaning the small rubber belt that is right under the tray, thats a common issue with these things not working right in other cases.. Prolly not but it's worth a try !

I've had that problem too, the magnet is too strong. Leave a game in the tray to create space and the drive should always open, or do like was mentioned an put some tape or something there to keep the magnet from touching fully. Probably not a great fix but its better then having to fight a stuck drive every time you want to put a game in

i found the problem. it is the magnets. they are too strong. i just put a tiny bit of masking tape in the hole in the middle and it works fine now.

Thanks, the piece of Masking tape works like a charm. I added a little petroleum jelly on it, just a dab to lubricate the other part when it clamps.

yes I just found out it's the magnet and I'm doing the same thing, tape please! ha ha. Whats going on is the motor that opens the door gets weak over time and the magnets don't so eventually the magnets win the war of the opening tray, so to help out the motor just weaken the magnet hold by using the tape
