Sounds like your hard drive is failing. I would back up my user data ASAP. Start looking for a replacement drive. It uses a 2.5 SATA drive. Here are just some of the drives your Book will take: http://www.ifixit.com/Mac-Parts/MacBook-...
Installation is very easy: MacBook Core 2 Duo Hard Drive Replacement
UPDATE: This is an unusual problem and may take some trial and error. First reset the System Management Unit by removing the battery and unplugging the AC. Now hold the start button down for 15 seconds. Replace AC cord and battery and restart.
Next reset the PRAM: start up holding down the Option & Command and P and R keys, wait for it to tones three times.
{Please let us know the results. Thanks for working with me.

Gee, when you change the question instead of updating it, it sure makes my answer look stupid.

How long does it take to boot up from the system installation disk? Do you have the new drive in now? Did you do a clean install or clone it?

Sorry, this is my first question.
It takes about the same amount of time to boot from the installation disk. I took the new drive out. I did a clean install.

Ok, I have reset the System Management Unit and the PRAM, still no change.
