Do I have to have my tablet repaired or is there something I can do? Have tried the factory reset, as well as starting with vol. up & on/off buttons pressed; no change. Checked headphones in other devices and they work.

it may be that your head phone jack is faulty and so are the speakers, has the tablet been dropped?

Was not dropped that I know of... 13 yr old sometimes uses it when his is charging. Could be the first clue!
using it while charging wouldn't do anything, it could be the headphone jack is out of place or bent, but as for sound without them in I'm not too sure that could be multiple things
