Screen is dark except thin white line at the bottom

All of a sudden the display of my MBP does not work properly anymore. The computer powers up ok, but the display stays dark with a thin white line at the bottom of the display. The white Apple logo is lit. I can connect an external display, like my iMac27, and operate the MBP from its own keyboard and trackpad; all seems to work well except the screen. I have tried PRAM and SMC resets, but without success. Grateful for any advice folks can give me.

Most likely your display is gone. Often someone sits or drops something onto the lid breaking it.

To double check things here you'll need to plug in an external display via the DisplayPort connection Vs sharing of the screen with your iMac.

If the DisplayPort connection fails then the onboard GPU chip is gone Vs the display its self.

If you jump to Step 8 you can see the displays connector. Is the connector fully seated? Also do you see any corrosion or other damage in the area?

As I said, the display port connection works fine; I can see everything on my iMac. Does this now mean that the LCD panel is gone and needs to be replaced or could it be something else, like a bad connection or so.

To be clear here, you are using an external display not your iMac as a display correct? If that is true then your display assembly will need to be replaced.

Given the symptoms I would say its the display its self. You could pop the bottom cover off and double check the connection but I doubt that it.

I have connected the Power Book to my iMac and use the iMac as the display.

OK, Then you are using the iMac's as a display using a shared screen. In this mode you are not using the systems graphics services, instead you are using a data connection to the iMac to have it do the graphics and then display on to the iMac's display.

If you use the DisplayPort connection to a VGA or HDMI display that will be the needed proof which area needs repair.

Thanks, Dan; I see your point now. So I was wrong in thinking the connected iMac functions merely as an external display; you say, the iMac does the graphics for the MacBook and thus I understand there could still be a problem with the MBP's graphic chip.

OK, I will have to look for a "real" external display; will take me a few days, since I am travelling and don't have the right cable with me. I will get back.
