If part of screen is displaying correctly, GPU should be fine?

I have fixed up a few MBP's (usually broken screens), and have a question.

If a MBP has a wonky screen in which part of the screen image is garbled and part is completely fine (i.e. you can see the OSX desktop), can you conclude with any certainty that the issue is the screen (or perhaps cable) and not the GPU/logic board?

In my experience when there is a GPU issue, the entire screen typically does not display correctly.

I understand the best way to confirm is to connect to an external display, but don't have this capability right now.

Thanks, Steve

Thanks guys for the responses- it's a machine I am considering buying on Craigslist. Sorry to mention the model- it is the 2.2/2.4 15" model (mid-2007), so it does have the Nvidia 8600.

I will try to arrange to test the computer with an external monitor, I guess it is hard to say for sure otherwise. Basically, half the screen is fine, the bottom half has distorted banding pattern. I've seen this type of artifact before on bad/broken LCD's, so was just wondering if anyone else had experience with this pattern. Thanks, Steve

Just which version of the Apple MacBook Pro (15- 17-inch) May 2007 – September 2008 do you have with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M video processor? Is it that hard to hook up to a external monitor to get a free replacement logic board? Would you please give me the last three letters of your serial number so I can confirm your exact machine and we may not have to have the external monitor.

+ good answer....I just had a 2.4Ghz MBP with the Nivida card issue. Fixed for free under apples extended warranty for the recall they have. So it's worth checking out if your machine qualifies for the recall.
