My Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2014 logic board has shorted, and I need to access the files on the hard drive. I have heard this isn't as easy as in the 2013 MBPs. Is there any way for me to remove the hard drive and buy some sort of enclosure to access the files?

The reason you have heard this is because the hard drive in your mac book is a solid state drive that has a not sata connection type. You can search for 2014 Mac Book Pro hard drive enclosure on google and find some enclosures that would allow you to connect it to another computer via usb. If you want to make sure that you get your data then you could take it to the big blue box store and see the guys there. They can send it off and have all the data extracted minus programs. It is rather expensive and time consuming though.
