Controller won't connect in safe mode

Changed hard drives in the PS4 from the 500gb to a 2tb drive, have to boot to safe mode to install the " PS4UPDATE.PUP " from my flash drive and it won't accept any controllers when I connect them...

I switched the drives back and the controller worked fine when running the console but when I booted safe mode on the 500gb drive it still wouldn't accept my controller, it charges from the console but won't connect, the light just flashes white when I press the PS button, could this be faulty hard ware in the console? (Ive tried every micro usb cables on multiple different controllers, with an unpaired controller it wouldn't even attempt to sync, the controller flashed blue till it stopped looking for a console)

My ps5 is doing the same currently..

Madden 23 crashed but all other games are working fine

Op here, this was years ago on the ps4 before the ps5 was a thing, sorry to hear that its happening on the ps5

as for the ps4 my buddy had a clear DS4 controller that he used to game on his PC, unclear if its Sony DS4 or an aftermarket controller, but it talked to the console while the Sony ones I had didn't work. id just keep trying controllers and cables until something works

I experienced this as well. It finally required an actual PS4 micro-usb cable purchased at Target for $10. All the other cables I had did nothing. May just be the type of cable…I went with the “official” Playstation usb cable. Smooth sailing from there.

That’s exactly what fixed it for me, too. Went through so many USB cables until the original one finally fixed the problem.

I had this same issue and was in total panic. I came across this post and luckily Jeremy had left an answer that was correct. I was at that desperate point that I’d try anything, i tried 25 different usb cables and nothing would work. I went and bought the genuine play station cable and sure as heck it worked.

That's kind of a strange one. Here's what I would do...you don't actually have to boot it to safe mode to install the software. Just put the replacement hard drive in then start it up. It will prompt you to put the USB drive in, then you can install from there. See if that works.

It's possible that it's faulty software on the console but I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like that.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response, but It just boots safe mode and says the PS4 can't start when I try to just turn it on, it then prompts for me to hit the ps button again with the controller plugged in, and still remains unresponsive

That's strange...when you put a new hard drive in it should ask you to insert a USB drive with the system software on it. I haven't seen one before that doesn't do that. I'm guessing it must be some sort of software issue but it's hard to know for sure without begin able to test it myself.

I'm having that exact same issue... it seems like it's becoming a more common issue. I have an original PS4 controller and the newer PS4 controller (and I've tried 5 different cables). I wonder why I can't install and load the system software.

Lot of charging cables are only output cables and does not provide input back to console when you press ps button. You need to buy a data cable which takes both input and output so that when you press PS button it register input and send it back to console. Hope this helps
