Solder Paste Questions for Replacing IC

I have recently started soldering and i wish to try to repair an Iphone 6 plus that has touch disease and 2 iphone 6s pluses that have the not charging due to the charging IC that needs to be replaced/reballed.

I have a few questions:

Do i really need to use solder paste? (I want to replace them not reball)

Is it worth it to dish out extra money for high quality solder paste from good brands like MG Chemicals or should i stick to Mechanic solder paste?

Do i need anything else to do these solderings?

I have a soldering station/heat gun with regulators and I have bought good flux from genuine Amtech and Solder wick and heat resistant tape. I've been practicing on a damaged iphone 4 logic board.

Thanks for the help.

If you are replacing the IC's, then you do not need solder paste because the replacement IC's already have the solder balls. Solder paste is used to reball BGA IC's. Alternatively, you can also use solder balls of the proper dimension to reball the IC's. You will also need stencils to reball.

Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. You really need to practice them both to see what works best for you.

For changing touch IC's or Tristar chips, you need good quality flux and enough practice to apply just the right amount of heat, otherwise you can cause secondary damage. Keep practicing!

Hi

If you want to replace the IC ,then you don’t need solder paste. But if you need to reball, solder paste is an issue. You can use the following materials to do your repairs like hot air soldering tool, soldering iron, twizzers, solder wick, tacky flux and isopropile alcohol.

You can understand more if you have a technical support. I prefer you to reball it.

That will be a long term repair. There are companies in Toronto which help with the bga reballing and replacing issues. That will be helpful. So that your doubts will be better clarified.
