How to get pictures from dead iPhone 6?

My friend dropped her iPhone 6 in a lake. She tried the rice fix and it didn't work. I tried replacing the battery and screen and cleaning out the inside as well.

I can't get it to turn on or anything. I just need it to recognize on my mac so that I can get her photos off of it. She didn't back it up or use iCloud to store her photos. So I'm trying everything I can.

Any suggestions?

The rice myth kills too many phones...

The water is inside the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. The rice is nowhere near where the water is. So while it may soak up some water vapour, the real problem is the corrosion that is taking place as the water evaporates. Powering on the phone accelerates the process. The longer you let a phone sit in rice, the more time you are giving corrosion to damage your logic board. The saltier or harder the water is, the more damage will occur.

On some phones, rice treatments appear to work. But those are phones that had minimal water ingress and not anywhere near a danger area on the logic board. They would have recovered regardless of the intervention. The water is in the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. The rice is nowhere near where the water is...so it can't possibly help her phone?

Now for some ideas to try...

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board.

This is an Urban Legend that just won't die!

Sadly rice or other desiccant agent will not save any electrical device that has had something spilled into it or has been submerged.

Remove the battery ASAP! Keep the device as cool as possible (not frozen) until you can get it properly cleaned. Time is critical here the longer it takes to get the devices cleaned the less likely it can be saved.

@ddouget1 the only way to get any files of the phone is by getting it started long enough to be recognized. You said you cleaned it but did not tell us how.

I suggest you treat it just like any other water damaged iPhone. The very first thing you want to do is to not try to restart, sync or otherwise try to use the phone. This may further damage your phone. The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using [this guide Then clean it with +90% isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. You must remove all EMI shields of your board. If you do not, you are missing about 80% of the components to be cleaned. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. I would also go ahead and change the Lightning Connector Assembly. then you will have a know -good starting point for any further troubleshooting, should it become necessary. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate.

If you have no luck with that then you have to dig further into the actual electronics, I'd start with getting a schematic and boardview and test PP_BATT_VCC & PP_VCC_MAIN to see what the power situation is like and check for shortcircuits. If any of this is not within your capacbilities you do want to connect with users like @refectio on here or @reecee on here who have specialized in this type of repair.
