amazing and awful discovery on iPhone 3G

I have tried doing a full "erase" on a jailbroken iphone 3g. Tried this on two phones. THIS KILLS THE PHONE. LOCKS IT IN NO CHARGE MODE. CAN'T FIND A WAY OUT. ANYONE having this problem too??

Left in on the charger overnight. The screen shows only the "dead battery" icon with the flashing "lightning bolt" (put in charger) but putting in the charger has no effect! Nutty!

That shouldn't normally happen. It's pretty much impossible to brick any iDevice, since the bootrom (Which controls DFU, that "Connect to Charger" screen, and a few other things) cannot be modified under any circumstances, So this is probably a hardware problem. All that I can really think of is to clean out the dock connector, and/or try another cable.

Have you ever used a carrier unlock on this phone? There is a very, very small chance that that may have corrupted the baseband firmware (Which cannot be fixed, or recovered from) as this can render your device useless. However, I've only heard of this, and never actually seen it happen, so I wouldn't know the symptoms

I replaced the dock connector. I think this iphone was carrier unlocked so maybe the baseband firmware was corrupted but I have been able to get the phone into DFU mode (USB plug with iTunes screen) but that's that - iTunes program recognizes nothing. Weird, pointless!

Does the computer reconize it? There might be a problem with the driver for DFU mode/iBoot, and when you plug it in, does Windows make the "Device Connected" sound?

This shouldn't be normal, My iPhone 3G (Which is just a gizmo that I have laying around, since I don't have AT&T, and am a die-hard Android user) is beyond jailbroken. It also has a custom bootrom, which allows dualbooting iDroid (iPhone Android/Linux Kernal) I've restored this iPhone many times, and it still works. If you want, you can put it into DFU mode, and restore 4.1 (Or 4.2 if it's out when you read this) and jailbreak with redsn0w (0.9.6b for 4.1, a 4.2-compatible version probably isn't available yet) this should fix your problem, If your still having problems, let me know.

*Note* if you install 4.1, it will update your baseband to the newest one (5.14.02?) if it isn't already. So if you use an unlock, then you'll have to wait for a new version of Ultrasn0w to be released for the 5.14 baseband.

I've noticed this as well, if you jailbreak it and then erase it, it screws up. If its protected by applecare, take it back and they'll replace it.

(My circumstances were remote wipe via mobile me on a jailbroken 3Gs and it bricked)

That's interesting... Have you tried to just let it sit on the charger for a few hours?
