MacBook claims that external HD wasn't ejected properly, even though..

Hi Everybody,

I recently backed up some files onto my Western Digital 1TD External Hard Drive and when I ejected it safely via the trash icon, my MacBook claimed that it wasn't done safely. Then when I plugged it back in, then I get, "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk.Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files".

Does anyone know why this happens? Can you still eject your Hard Drive, even though this error message came on, while its plugged into your Mac? I hope my files aren't wiped out/corrupted automatically

Sounds like you disconnected before it was finished updating the directory. I would first try running Disk Utility on it, that failing use a higher end repair program like TechTool Pro or Drive Genius. This can also happen when writing to bad blocks on the hard drive. In that case the drive needs to be reformatted using the "write zeros" option to map out all the bad blocks in the directory so they don't get written to. There are numerous other causes but this happens to all of us.

Thanks for your help! Will try! However, have you also had cases when your hard drive corrupts photos randomly. The reason why I am asking is because before I transferred some of my content onto my WD HD, they were fine. However, some of them have digital artifacting/corruption going on. Are those repairable too?

I don't think your corrupted photos can be repaired. You might try pulling them off again.
