I bought the system used and the outside is in fantastic shape, almost immaculatel, but it will randomly freeze, not shut down, or the screen won't turn on or will light up but remain black. Sometimes after resetting it, it will work perfectly for a few hours but inevitably freezes again. Any help?
I have tried the Nintendo troubleshooting tips, but to no avail.

Thanks, I have tried those suggestions to no avail. It's not limited to a single game and the cards all work fine on another system.
So far the only other thing that I can find that can solve freezing is changing the SD card format from FAT16 to FAT362. This wont cause you to loose anything, if you do it correctly.
- turn off the 3DS,
- remove the SD card and opening it with a PC via a SD card reader,
- copy the contents from the card, into a temp folder on your PC,
- format the card with the PC and choose FAT32 as the file system,
- copy all the data back into the SD card,
- put the SD card back into 3DS.
Apparent the 3DS has a firmware bug that can cause occasional crashing/freezing.
Let me know if this works.
If that were the problem, it wouldn't happen with the SD card removed, right? I took it out and fired it up and sure enough, it froze before too long. But maybe It would need to be removed and then have the system reformatted?
It could still happen with the SD card removed. The reason for the reformatting is because the FAT16 format can cause read issues. The fact it foze with the SD card removed means the SD cards formatting isnt the issue.
You can try reformatting the home menu. This has fixed some freezing issues as its part of the dievices EPROM. Just be aware that it will kill any software icons and folders you've made.
Press L+R+B+D-Pad Down, hold these buttons and press power
If done correctly, you'll get a black screen on top and a popup window on the bottom,
Reformatting the system memory would have the same effect, though, right?

Hi, I had the same issue with the screen freezing and not turning on. After trying all of the above to no avail eventually I closed it and gave the system a gentle few bumps and shakes. Once doing this I found the problems disappeared and the system began working like a charm. I figured that there must have been dust or foreign material inside causing a short somewhere. After shaking it around it would seem I've dislodged the foreign material and eliminated the short. That's all I can put it down to. If anything was loose before shaking it wouldn't have fixed it. Hope this helps.

I'm other sure if I had the same problem but today while I was playing pokemon on my 3ds xl I was shiny hunting then all of a sudden my nintendo freezes I pressed the home button and hold the power button but nothing worked to turn off then after 30 seconds it turned off...Now this is the first time this has happened to me and I have had this nintendo for the past 5 months I have dropped it once but it wasn't really from a high place it was from my bed...So idk if I should just forget about it and just see it as a normal thing or be concerned about it

I had this exact same problem, and I finally figured it out.
Turn the 3D slider all the way up, THEN turn on the 3DS. This fixed my problem.

IF that's the case, that would be poop. I just did a factory reset so can't confirm your trick, but if it works that would be great for many ppl. Thanks for posting!

I have had my nintendo since 2015 and recently it would freeze or not turn on but the blue light is on.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix it.
I am trying to charge while of but it is not work in I think it has to do with the battery or the SD card but I do not know hopefully you guys can help me.

Same with me what I did is I drained the power to red and it just worked the day after it froze again and now it’s not working maybe it won’t freeze again for you

I FOUND A WAY DRAIN YOU DS TO RED AND TURN IT ON AND OFF A COUPLE OF TIMES I’m writing this right as my ds froze again so maybe it’s only temporary
