MacBook Pro won't sleep or wake by closing or opening the lid

I recently rebuilt a MacBook Pro from the ground up by purchasing parts from various sources, then threw them into a unibody enclosure and told them to work (thank's iFixit for the knowhow!)

Unfortunately, the one thing that doesn't work is the sleep wake functionality from opening and closing the lid. Is there a particular component in charge of that function? Is it possible to fix without handing it over to Apple(For obvious reasons)? I am fully comfortable with whatever option the iFixit community proposes, (as I did have to build it from the ground up). Any help is greatly appreciated!

The battery indicator is responsible for this, so it is possible you ripped the ribbon, or it is bad. Check to make sure the screen is being held shut to the palmrest, which will make sure there is a magnet in the screen lid, without this sleep functionality will not work.

Try a new battery indicator first.

Yeah, the screen is staying shut tightly to the palmrest. It is quite possible that the battery indicator is damaged (it still displays the battery estimation, but that doesn't mean it isn't damaged). Is that the only component responsible for sleep wake functionality?

That's the component for registering that the lid has been shut, signals get sent from here to tell the Mac to sleep.

If there is no liquid elsewhere on the board or the battery connector, replacing this should fix your issue.

Hey @goaliescottie did changing the battery connector solve the problem? I started getting it now as I had frequently removed the board for various reasons.

Yeah, that ended up being the issue. Very simple to replace, if I remember correctly. I think it’s only 1 or 2 screws.

Same problem after replacing battery! Which specific part is this? I need to purchase it!

One possible cause is that the sensor to detect lid opening can trigger by mistake. If so, you can disable it by going into Terminal.app and typing:

sudo pmset -a lidwake 0

Note that this means the Mac will no longer automatically wake when you open it. Instead you would need a key press or mouse click to wake.

Hi All, I have resolved this issue.

By all means, please try the SMC reset and PRam Reset. However, if your machine has had some recent hardware work done, for instance, a keyboard replacement, screen, or motherboard replacement. There is a tiny ribbon, which is very fragile and easily damaged when attempting hardware repairs.

One way to check this; is if the SMC Reset does not behave as it is supposed to ie "machine starts as soon as you let go of the power button and the other keys". This ribbon has a lot to do with that.

The ribbon is located on the left side, behind the battery. On the wall of your case, will be a silver plate with three tiny screws. The silverplate is connected to the ribbon. The small and fragile ribbon goes underneath the motherboard and plugs in at the top of the logic board next to the battery.

I've replaced that cable, it is called "The sleep control cable with Battery Sensor" or something like that, did an SMC reset, and voila.. my computer goes to sleep when I close the lid

@Shaun Michael - FYI: Battery Indicator Light Board. The sensor is located in the middle of the cable (back side) black rectangle. Apple P/N 922-9061
