Phone is dead after opening back to release a stuck SIM

A new SIM card got jammed in my Iphone 3G, so I found out how to open the back to release it, but when I put it back together, it was not working. I tried rebooting by holding the Power and Home buttons for 15 seconds. I tried rebooting by holding the Power, Home and Volume up buttons for 15 seconds. I tried recharging. The phone gave 2 little vibrations, but that was it. Is there any hope or did I ruin my favorite phone? Thank you, Nicki

An update: I removed the back and put it back on and now it powers on, but it is not responding to touch - I cannot 'slide' it on.

Ok, just saw your update. I'm now 99% sure that the ribbon cables are the issue. There's a special one for the touch feature that probably isn't properly seated. They need a bit of force, but make sure they're perfectly aligned before applying pressure to them.

That worked! Those ribbons were loose. I am grateful for your help!

I would reopen the phone and check if all the ribbon cables connecting the display to the phone are correctly seated. You can use the beginning (up to step 11) of this guide to verify what goes where and how it should go there:

iPhone 3G Battery Replacement

Also, while you're in there, check for anything that may have bent or come loose the last time you visited. Such incidents can cause the phone to short out and refuse to boot.

Lastly, be very careful when you're working on the phone since the battery is still connected and possibly charged. Preferably remove the ribbon cables using your fingers or something plastic. No poking around with metal! :)
