iPhone SE water damage - Advice needed

Hi all,

I need your advice to take next step in repairing my daughters phone.

She dropped her iPhone SE 16gb in toilet and it stayed in the water for approximately 30 seconds.

It took me 15-30 min to open the phone and unplug the screen and battery. It was warm at that time.

I dried the phone using hairdryer for approximately 15 min and high heat - both lcd and the motherboard part. I then left it to rest for 1 day before trying to activate it again.

I have tried to put the peaces together however no reaction at all.

I tried following:

1. Unplug battery. Plug in lcd. Plug in to charger. Wait 10 min. No reaction even if I tried to click power button. I could not feel it warming up either.

2. Plug in battery to motherboard, plug in to charger. No reaction

I don't want to spend too much money and want to figure out if it's a garbage now or worth to repair. Is there any way of testing this without buying a new lcd and battery?

What type of damage do you think it got?

Thanks in advance

The water is inside the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. When the water is allowed to evaporate, it leaves deposits of minerals that can cause short circuits or corrosion. Heating or powering the phone accelerates the process. The water needs to be displaced, not heated and evaporated.

You need to do the following:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board.

An iPhone SE is absolutely worth trying to recover rather than throwing it into the landfill.

Hi,

Than k you very much.

It drying now so i will re-assemble tomorrow, however I have some questions.

1. Any way to open the shield?

2. I broke the battery as the black piece surrounding it have ripped. Can I somehow test that it works without a battery?

@refectio is right about everything he said. After all the electricity you've put into that phone, after the dip in the toilet, I think it's gonna be real dicey. Either find a local shop, a good shop, that has an ultrasonic bath and hopefully understands how microsoldering works. I'm not saying this to upset you. Basically the whole public doesn't understand how to handle this situation. You cannot open those shields with a hair dryer. Without that you can't clean, and if you get the phone back on, without properly cleaning, it'll fry out later. Maybe not. But probably

Thanks!! Is there anyway to test without a battery? I heard that iPhone SE might not show any sign without a working battery.

Yeah, you can plug it in, and it'll flash the apple logo. I seriously wouldn't add any more electricity to the situation, until after the ultrasonic bath

The iphone 5 se ive had so many with water damage and 90% of the time after cleaning the iphone its dead or overheats due to the complex micro parts that get erroded so quickly even from slight water damage that do not even get through the shields the condensation can even damage it most comon is sim tray it goes through excellent phone if apple just spent bit more time on the design to prevent water getting in so easily.

Unfortunately, I got the same problem. Except the phone backlight is dead, speakers muted, buttons broken, and even more.

I can see everything but I also see what looks to be ink blot samples in the background

@jameswhitcomb Those blots are most likely liquid in the display. There is a small chance it could evaporate and leave the screen still functional; it's not likely but it is possible. You may be able to hasten that by going over the screen with a hair dryer or just wait a few days to see if it gets better on its own.

If the spots are still there in a week or two then you're probably going to have to replace the screen. The good news is given the age of the phone, replacement screens are pretty cheap and not too difficult to do.
