Recent windows update completely disabled trackpad and keyboard

My problem is simple, would everybody stop trying to be so cute.

EVERYTHING WORKING FINE then windows updates, yesterday (4/12/17) NOW BOTH LAPTOP KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD DISABLED!!! I briefly was able to use a usb mouse and on screen keyboard untill I followed some advice on internet forum that said seek out a certain 'regedit' entry and delete 'upper-filter' NOW I CAN'T EVEN ACCESS WINDOWS 10 WITH USB MOUSE. I can't do anything. The welcome screen with the clock is there and ticks away every minute so nothing is frozen I JUST CAN'T ACCESS Any %#*@ keyboards or mice. WTF, Windows. I'm so !#^&@@, how can Microsoft keep getting away with this. Every %#*@ update has some sort of frustration associated with it that I'm usually able to resolve. BUT THIS PROBLEM IS INTRACTABLE!!! IT WON'T ALLOW ME TO DO ANYTHING!! Please help me, somebody!! Microsoft should be sued BIG LEAGUE for this nonsense. I don't think I'll ever buy another Windows machine ever.

Hi,

Try to get into the Windows Recovery Environment and then start the laptop using the System Restore option to a point before the last update.

To get into the WRE either use a Recovery USB flashdrive (which you should make after this if you haven't already got one - Go to Control Panel > Recovery) or use the following procedure:

Start the laptop, when it boots into Windows allow a few seconds (or if it reaches the desktop) and then force stop the laptop by holding the power button until the laptop completely shuts down. When completely shut down, start again and do exactly the same thing i.e. start > boot > force shutdown. Then do it again, On the 3rd attempt (maybe the 4th) the laptop should boot into the WRE.

Select Troubleshooting > Advanced > System Restore ( DO NOT select Reset this PC as this will erase all your data and re install Windows)

Here is a link that may be of some help.

Lesson perhaps,

Never touch the registry unless you have created a restore point before you do. That way you can go back if it goes pear shaped and if this is being cute, you're the one doing all the shouting and swearing.

I figured out the 3 power down restart part. But system restore (after an hour or so) fails with an error message of some sort that basically says system restore failed no changes made you're still fuc$%# At least I know that I can get into this quasi-recovery mode and try something else, Microsoft should have to pay for my pain and suffering, this is unacceptable!!

You're close. Restore point doesn't work but restoring previous version brought me back to version 16.07 which gave me back my mouse and keyboard! Wohoo! Now I need to turn off automatic updates. Backup quick! I'm back!

andrew, i'm in the same situation as you.

i already tried the system restore, but the windows updates are automatic and i'm back in the mud.

i'm really angry too, but using keyboard on screen limits my time and rage!

Hi,

You don't state the model number of your Asus laptop but try installing the latest Asus ATK Package and Smart Gesture drivers.

Be sure to install the ATK Package drivers "first" before installing the Smart Gesture drivers. Take notice of the NOTES: near the top of the webpage.

How do I install ANTHING when I can't get the keyboard or trackpad or USB keyboard or USB mouse to do some freaking work.

tarafından

@Alves -- I, like you, was able to use the onscreen keyboard and even a USB mouse ... UNTIL ... I took some advice from an online forum that said to delete the 'upper filter range' of a 'regedit' key and that fu%$& things up even more as I could no longer even use a USB mouse. Microsoft should not be allowed to get away with this nonsense. It's no small matter permanently 'bricking' my computer. The many hours I've spent trying to resolve this, Microsoft owes me $1000 of my time for this BS!!

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Computer is a X501A 64bit Asus laptop

Hi,

So obviously getting into 'safe mode' via the WRE doesn't allow the keyboard/mouse to work either then? ( WRE > Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup settings

Hello everyone ,

This Is a Little Trick That You May Have To Use for fixing this Issue -

First Disable Your Antivirus Otherwise It May Stop the restore And Please Perform Restore To The Date when Your Computer Was Normal .Restore Computer In Easy Steps

Uninstall The Old Driver Using Device Manger .

Now Go the Offcial Website Of Asus and type Your Computer Model Number Than Search for Driver .

Download the driver and install it . Than Restart Your computer And See if this fix the issue

None of these answers were helpful, both my ASUS and my Lenovo, is useless. One won't recognize the mouse or keyboard... the other (the ASUS) won't finish booting long enough for me to install LINUX... WINDOWS SUCKS!

I have had to restore twice due to this problem. First when the update was pushed out. This time when that update installed again. How do I prevent the update from running again?

I just had an update bork my touchpad as well. Reloaded drivers, did nothing. Tried device manager, doesn't show up. Tried adding a device, doesn't show up. Tried going through the BIOS, and there's no option that applies to it... Amazing how every update Windows manages to just completely screw something up.

No longer relevant since this issue should have gone away with 'support' sic for windows 7, however for anyone still needing it: create a boot disk or bootable USB memory or a boot CD as appropriate you can search how to it online, as well as find burnable recovery images and tools, the boot disk can then be used to attempt startup repair, or restore (from a saved backup,. You have one, right? ) or reinstall. If you have your original install CD or made a boot CD , that will also serve. And yes, automatic updates can be disabled in advanced settings. So can forced upgrades. Search how.
