the white screen is intermittent . Display works when plugged into docking station. If I refrigerate for 5 mins display comes back for about 15 mins then goes white again. Otherwise it works fine.

Alright, first of all don't put it in the freezer, sounds like a good idea but actually bad. Electronics don't like to go from one extreme temperature to another. Sounds like your board is overheating. Either buy a new board, or send it to a board repair shop. Something is shorted out and looks like getting a new board would actually be cheaper. Microsoldering is expensive work

Have you tried doing a hard reset? Often fixes many issues on the nano ipods.
Hold the menu and center button until the apple logo shows.
