kevin, in most cases this has been a hardware issue, but try this first. try to p put your iPod into Disk Mode by

  1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
  2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
  5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"

If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button. More on this on here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339

If you cannot force your iPod into disk mode and restore it, i would think you are looking toward a new battery and/or a HDD. If the battery won't charge, nothing will work properly. It's also a cheaper fix. Which version iPod do you have? Here is some more info. http://www.best-ipod-online.com/ipod-dis... ..good luck and let us know what works for you.

I have the ipod classic, i tried to get to manual disk mode to no avail, just brings me back to sad face. I figured i would be looking at one of those 2(battery or hard drive) but figured i would verify before i started dumping parts/money into it. thanks for your help, will respond when i get parts replaced as to what it was.

kevin, start with the battery. It's cheaper and may just resolve the issue. Let us know how it is going and good luck
