3 stripped screws on LCD shield plate

I bought a $73 iPhone 6 display replacement to fix my phone. I followed the guide all the way down to the last step except I cannot take the LCD shield plate off because it has 3 stripped screws. No I did not strip the screws. Matter of fact, every Phillips 00 and 000 except ONE, did not work. I had to use a 1.0 flathead bit to remove these screws. My bits are good quality so the screws on this phone must have been cheap.

I am making myself physically ill right now. The rubber band trick did not work. Using a flathead only broke my bit. Now I have tried a drill but I drilled all the screws flat. They aren't coming out, not even metal shavings. Please help I am out $73 and my phone is in pieces.

Sorry @benjamen50 i was gonna comment, this is just...alright. So you stripped those screws. No one else did. It's not the fault of the screws. I am not going to argue with you. If you want my help. My advice. Do not argue with me. I'll delete and pull out of here fast. So you're there now. Is the board ok? Can you turn on the phone and use functionality currently? Cause you could be out a lot more than $73. You can try using, probably a crappy screw driver, and super gluing the driver to the screw. This is going to be slightly more difficult after what you've done, and the torque itself will be difficult to fight

The phone is back together and working, but believe what you want man. I did NOT stripped the screws. I worked on 2 MacBook Pro's before and they had tiny, overtorqued Phillips screws that were not a perfect + in the middle. My bits were brand new and they spun in place with or without pressure. Only the flathead 1.0 and Torque screw from the guide worked. I tried the rubber band, krazy klue, and drill method. The drill method only worked once I did it against a table with a ton of force and I mangled those 3 LCD shield plate hole unusable. Thankfully I didn't need them.

I believe you bro. I replace screens for a living and a lot of people bring in iphone 6 and 6s and the screws are stripped before I even touch them. Vert aggravating but hey its all good!

I believe that you didn't strip the screws as well.

And this is why I keep a wiha Phillips head screw on me when this happens. Always helps with stripped Phillips plus screws.

Well it's drilled flat now so I think the only way is to drill them out extremely carefully..

I don't understand what your saying? NONE of my Phillips #00 or #000 in the iPhone 6 worked. I have 2 driver sets with brand new bits and they didn't work. I had to use a 1.0 flathead. When I got down to the LCD Shield Plate I was only able to remove 3 screws. The other 3 were overtorqued and stripped already NOT BY ME. I tried the rubber band method with 3 different Phillips and flathead, didn't work. I just tried drilling them and they are FLAT now. I cannot remove the head. I keep drilling and get no metal shavings. What the !&&* do I do?

What's so hard to understand... @benjamen50 is saying that high quality drivers, such as the Wiha, work better than other drivers for partially stripped screws. Now that you have ground down everything, you will have to revert to brute strength methods.

You could try something like this: Precision Screw Extractor Set

tarafından

I never heard of WIHA. I have Mastercraft and ROK both made in Canada. The bits were brand new. Are those not good quality? Only the flathead 1.0 bit worked an a piece of that got broke off because it's such a tiny bit.

I had to drill even harder to get those 3 screws out. I did it against a table and got them all out, cutting a finger in the process. I reassembled the LCD shield plate to the new display with only 2 screws, one one each side. One of them fell on the ground and I couldn't find it. Whole phone is back together and working, including touch ID. What should have been a 2 hour job turned into 4 days of a headache.

But you succeeded! Congrats!!

Plus, a little bloodletting makes you part of the brother/sisterhood ;>)

I had the same problem. I solved it by taking a wire cutter to the whole screw socket. I had to cut one on each side of the plate. Overall the phone worked just fine. i did go back and add a layer of adhesive to the outside of the phone just under the screen. The Iphone 6s has this tar-like rubber adhesive thats very hard to seperate. So i ordered it off amazon just for insurance even though the phone snapped right together and works as new!

The adhesive technically "doesn't do anything" as Apple was prepping for the water resistant release. I would say the 6S is water resistant, and now that you've added the adhesive, back to same condition

how many stripped screws did you have? What do you mean the whole socket? Did you just snip the metal tab off the old display and LCD shield plate? I was getting real desperate and I was just going to twist the !&&* out of them with my pliers.

tarafından

@fml Yes I cut the whole metal tab off with a wire cutters and twisting. It came clean off. It worked just fine! Once you cut it off.... Make sure the little bit of the tab that's left is not bent in any direction so it can line up with the new metal tab on the new screen.

I had pretty much the same issue. all of the screw were coming out fine. I get to the shield plate and theyre wayyyy over torqued (too much lock tite?) and (I was being INCREDIBLY careful, and Im pretty good at this kinda stuff) within 1 or 2 turns the screws started to strip. no way to get them out. So Im trying to understand the solutions you guys proposed here. You cut off the tabs? what holds the shield plate in?
