Why does my PS2 show a static black and white screen?

Whenever I start up my PS2 the screen shows a static black and white screen, the green light comes on and the disk spins fine, but there is no video. After about 1 minute of random static the screen just shows black. I tried to use my PS3's AV cable and the same thing happened. Can anyone help please?
