Can't update OS. After update system fails, every time...

iMac 21.5 late 2013

I bought this computer and all was fine. It came with an OS X Yosemite, free upgrade. But, if I run the upgrade I begin having problems and eventually the system fails. I tried to delete the 'free upgrade', but couldn't. I talked for many hours with MAC support and tried resetting my computer several times and deleting all data as well. But, after all that I still can't upgrade. It works fine as long as I never upgrade... But, this is an old version and I consider it unsafe, so just use it for gaming and never log into anything on it. I need it for other things though... Does anyone know what I can do? It has 8GB, and uses Intel Iris Pro 1536MB.

Need more specifics.

"I begin having problems" -- What kind of problems? Under what circumstances?

"I tried to delete the 'free upgrade', but couldn't." -- Assuming you mean the OS installer, why not? What happens when you try? The OS installer is just an app in your Applications folder. You're unable to delete it?

"But, this is an old version and I consider it unsafe..." -- It's not.

My computer came with a free upgrade to Yosemite. It doesn't work. So, tech support tried to lead me through deleting it, but my computer can not delete the Yosemite free upgrade. If I tried to download a new Yosemite from the App store it just goes to the free upgrade that came with the computer and it's a circle that goes forever. So, I scrubbed the computer by using time machine and going back to the beginning. I've tried Yosemite, and other iMac upgrades, but none of them have been successful. Recently, I'm trying the new Sierra, but get The installer payload failed signature check. I reset PRAM and SMC. Also, I did the clock check. All to no avail... Specifics when I upgrade to Yosemite are not clear my computer just doesn't work well and eventually crashes, but over a rather long period of time. I'm trying to skip Yosemite now.

Thanks for your reply.

As long as I never upgrade the iMac works fine, but that's not safe. I need upgrades for security purposes.

Take a look at the date on your Yosemite download. Now reset your date and time to a couple of days after that , then install it.

Sorry, do you mean reset my computer date, or reset the Yosemite download date? I'm not sure how in either case. But, I'll give it my best.

I reset my computer to a few days after the Yosemite date. But, my App Store was then blank. I put the iMac back on current time and the apps were there again. Then, I tried to 'resume' download and install. During the install it stopped and said OS X could not be installed on your computer. An error occurred while extracting files from the package "Essentials.pkg". Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

I meant the computer date. This something that's been happening the last year or so and installers became date sensitive.

Have you started the computer yet in recovery mode and scanned your hard drive for errors? (Repair permissions and Repair Disks).

Yes, and it checked good. But, still the problem seemed to persist. Thanks.

Finally, I think I have got it. I reset the PRAM. EMC, checked the clock time and it was on time. But, then I changed the time to 2014 and back again. Hoping that it would work, I then erased the drive and upgraded to Sierra. It seems fine! My notifications flash in the upper right corner of my window, but I think that's due to the VPN I use. So, I shut notifications off. All is good for now. Thanks everyone!
