How do I tear down and replace the Airport Wireless Card?

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody

Hi there!

I bought a refurbished MBP 13-inch 2.26 GHz (A1278) and I don't think it came with a wireless card (I think I got ripped!).

Bluetooth is working but my airport says "No Airport card installed".

Where do I check to see if there is actually a wireless card installed? And if there isn't one, is it possible to replace it? Does anyone know how?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

The card, located in the upper display is probably fine. The wire to it or connecting to the logic board are the most likely suspects. Check your connections first. How's are the hinges on this machine?

Here's what it looks like: http://www.macpartsonline.com/922-8782-a...

Here's a video on the teardown: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/manual.php...

Hi Mayer,

Thank you for your answer. I followed the teardown video, it was a little tricky but relatively straight forward. I managed to find the AirPort Card inside the Clutch Casing at the base of the screen in between the hinges.

The wire connecting the airport card to the mother board looks fine, I think it is connected properly. Also, the other end of that wire is connected firmly to the airport card.

I did see this however. There are two wires with gold endings attached to the airport card - are these the antennae? One of them is connected firmly, the other one was disconnected and loose. I tried to push the wire into place but it wouldn't stay. I ended up using electrical tape to keep it in place. This hasn't solved the problem, my macbook still says that the airport card isn't installed. But maybe this loose antennae is the problem?

Update...

After following (the AWESOME) video guides on this website, I totally tore down my mac this evening. I found the AirPort Card inside the Clutch casing... so it IS in there, I'm not crazy.

It looked ok, and the cables at either side were connected ok. BUT there were two wires attached to wireless card, I'm guessing from the gold colored tips to them, connecting to the circuit board, that these are the WiFi and Bluetooth antennae?? Anyone? 1 was firmly attached, the other was loose. I tried to connect the loose one but it wouldn't hold down.

Thoughts?

Check the connector to see if the pins are straight or broken

If you do end up replacing the airport card, made sure the cable is oriented correctly when you plug it into the airport card or it can short out the logic board and the airport card. The U shape on the connector should be facing away from you.

I'm going to attempt replacing the airport card in my MacBook Pro 13in Unibody this week. Is there a particular way to disconnect / detach the bluetooth and airport antennae?

I'm hoping they can be disconnected as easily as the numerous cable connections to the logic board!

Hopefully they don't need to be soldered on or anything like that.

Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.
