MiniDV camcorder struggles to rewind - play and fast forward are OK

Hi all,

I have a Panasonic NV-GS320 camcorder which I purchased about 10 years ago. This model was one of the later ones to record to MiniDV cassettes.

I recently attempted to use the camera after a long period in storage. I discovered that, while play and fast forward work normally, it is having problems rewinding. From the end of the tape it rewinds about 2/3 of its length normally, but after that it begins to audibly struggle, and soon after that it stops completely and produces the infamous "press reset button" message.

I have tried several different tapes, and had similar results with all of them.

I was just wondering whether anyone has encountered this before, and if so whether there is any repair that I can feasibly attempt myself (I am able to disassemble the camera without too much difficulty). As I don't use it that often, I'm not keen on paying for a repair or replacement - although from what I gather, my lack of use may well be what led to this fault in the first place!
