I'm curious about this as well. However, the problem with shorts is that many times the device that delivers the current can be put into current limiting mode, which means that that the voltage goes down as well and therefore not much power is delivered...so no heat. I'd like to hear from other tech's as well because these cameras are expensive.

@refectio - Check the second vid and tell us if what he is showing us would have helped you diagnose the problem.

Thanks for the link. It's an interesting video and in this context, the FLIR really helps. However, the video also supports my point. This would also have been an easy short to find using alternative methods (fingertip, low DCPS voltage, IPA, freeze spray etc.) as well. And when it comes to VCC_MAIN shorts, the switching MOSFET always lights up first but it is never the problem.

I don't doubt that a FLIR is a useful tool but it's not a magic bullet and it becomes a question of where you want to spend your tool money. For those on a limited budget, there are more important tools to buy. Just MHO.

I agree! I couldn't justify it either.

While thermal imaging can be useful I don't think it offers the detail you are expecting with such small components used in a phone. Keep in mind no all shorts will have a high current running through them. I do use a non contact thermometer to help diagnose cooling issues in laptops & desktop systems.

I only work on PC's so the phone guys will need to speak up on what they use.

Here's a Vid on someone using one to diagnose a logic board: FLIR ONE Thermal Imager Review for Electronics Debugging

As you can see the image is quite fuzzy so smaller devices just won't show up. Don't forget you would need to have a profile already for a good working device to compare with.

I just don't think its detailed enough to be useful for small electronic devices (phones & PC's).

Here's someone using it to locate a bad cap in a iPhone: Find Short Circuit quickly With Flir Thermal Camera - iPhone 6 no power Repair so maybe it can be useful but just watching the what he is seeing I'm not sure if I could have detected it down to the cap he is replacing. It would clearly have aimed me to a smaller area to look but not to the level of a given component. You still need to use the head and tools of the trade!
