Can an old internal drive be used externally.

I want to swap out my old drive which is working but in trouble and be able to drag back into the new one only what I need from the old drive. If it was mounted in a case of some kind I could connect it and look at the contents. I have two backup drives that might work but the cases have no screws.

You most certainly can use old drives as externals. If you go to www.newegg.com you can buy an enclosure for your hard drive that will make it into an external drive. I've used one of these before and it worked great. You can get them for relatively cheap ($10+). If you can't find one on newegg that is cheap enough amazon.com has them as well. I think they're just called external enclosures. Hope that helps! Good luck!
