My 40 inch Vizio model D40u-D1 keeps turning off and restarting.

When I turn on the tv if comes on and shows a picture for about 2 seconds and turns off and then turns back on automatically again until picture shows for about 2 seconds. Then it turns off again. It continues this cycle for several minutes and then it finally comes on and stays on. I have changed power cord, tried different outlet, unplugged power and pushed and held power button on the back for 30 seconds. It still does it. What to do to fix?

Hello Thomas,

I have been having the same problem with my TV for a while now. If you find a fix somewhere, I would appreciate it if you shared. My problem happens with several devices. Doesn't matter what HDMI Cable I use. It's very annoying.

I have a 70in vizio about 5 years old that keeps shutting off as soon as the picture loads. I've tried unplugging the usb ports and tried holding the off button down to no avail. Also tried a hard disconnect did not not work either unfortunately… can anyone help with this situation?

@thkeith3rd this sounds like either a power board issue or a backlight array issue. Either way you would have to take it apart and take a closer look at the board. Make sure that there are no leaking, domed looking capacitors or any other obviously damaged components. Make sure that all cables are properly seated by removing them and the reseat. Check to make sure that there are no broken pins etc. on those contacts. after that you need a multimeter to measure the output on the different connectors and validate their values against those on the boards. Main issue I'd check is the connection of the LED's to the power board etc.

If you have a corrupted flash drive in the usb port it will continue to power on and off. Remove your flash drive from the usb port and your television will work again immediately.

to fix this issue you need to go into settings and find option to reset to factory defaults. this make the tv just like the day you bought. i have the vizio 40 inch and it would get turned off and come right back on...resetting to factory defaults fixed my issue.

I have the same problem. My 42” Vizio keeps shutting off. I have taken the television apart and blown the dust out and off of the boards and ports. I have reseated the power outlet and cords. I have re- booted the television both hard and soft. I have reset to factory settings. Nothing works.

Does your TV shut completely off? Of no video but still has audio?

@oldturkey03 had the best response. Check the power board, or all boards, for swollen and leaking capacitors. Those are a dead give-away to your possible solution, and many electronic devices from about 199 thru 2013 (maybe even later) were victims of this problem.

Can't tell you how many computer motherboards and stereo system main boards and power supply boards I've encountered with this problem - I have a Denon on my workbench right now with a few. My 2001 Polaris speedometer had two swollen and leaky caps that caused a transistor to fail, and stopped the lights and 4WD from working, but, I digress... Those are the first things I look for in any electronic circuit anymore.
