PS3 doesn't boot, no video, green light

My PS3 60GB (CECHE01) recently stopped booting. I tried two new sets of cables, thinking it was my TV, but no luck. Next, I tried to access the Safe Mode/recovery menu, but still saw no output on the screen. I also tried Safe Mode on an old, composite input TV to rule out my primary TV—no love there either.

A controller connected to USB will not register; it just blinks all four LEDs slowly. It shows the same symptoms when connected with component and old-school composite cables. I have no HDMI available to test.

The green light is on, there's no "yellowish" light of death, and the HDD access light will blink once at boot, then stays off.

The HDD doesn't have any unusual noises (clicking, voice coil dead, etc.).

Since I can't even get into Safe Mode, does this mean it's motherboard or power supply?

Hey Tom!

Sorry for the delay. I ended up sending it back to Sony for the $129 special. They shipped me out a new one. I suspect it is similar to the ylod, and if you have a hotplate ro reflow rig, you might be able to get whichever chip was loose reconnected, but I wan't set up for that.

I'm having the same problem after returning from a plane trip. I suspect my luggage with my PS3 got knocked around pretty good in checked baggage.

My ps3 slim 160 gb started freezing then it got worst and worst then one day it just shut down and there was no light. then I clicked the power botton then the red came on then I did it again then it turn green but their was nothing on my TV screen then it shut off again.from thet day it kept on doing the same thing.I opened it and cleaned it and it didn't work and the fan and everything is OK but it won't stay on and display pixies in the sceen

Have you tried holding down the power button at boot? While the PS3 is off, press and hold the power button until you get a second beep, then release the button. This should reset your PS3 to use whatever component cables are connected. This is necessary when you change component cables, especially when you switch from HDMI to regular cables.

I don't think its a power supply issue since you are getting a green light meaning the PS3 is turning on. If it was a bad HDD, then it would still turn on and would give you the HDD error code. And it's definitely not the yellow light of death.

It could be a bad input connection to the motherboard or a bad motherboard. I would try the HDMI. That might do the trick.

I'll see if I can get an HDMI connection, maybe that will at least give me an error code. I have reset the video, and also tried to get into Safe Mode, but it never outputs on the multi-av port.

And the two really weird things: No HDD activity, and controller never registers in safe mode, make me lean toward the MB. If it was just the AV port, I should still get a controller to register, even if I can't see anything.

Good luck!! I have had a few PS3s that wont boot or anything then after I have opened them up, clean them, reapply thermal paste and check all the connections they work just fine. Sometimes they get so much dust in them that it begins to cause problems.

If you cant get it working then I would try cleaning it before you replace the MB. A MB replacement should always be the last alternative.

Thanks so much much. I had my ps3 HDD removed and reserted and now its working perfectlyafter I had bown it.. the formal message of cannot start the appropriate system storage cannot be found is gone now.

my ps3 starts for 30 seconds and then turns off by itself(no lights) when i press again it turns into red. need help.

hey there i have had this problem i have fixed it :-) it only cost 20cents ... :-)

the problem with mine was no vid,no audio, cant geting to safe mode, takes discs blue light blinks but thning else....

the way i fixed it was open the unit remove rom,power,card reader ... you see the preasure plates for the GPU and the CPU take them off and put a coin (about 1.2mm thick)one coin in the middle where the preasure plate will go for both gpu and cpu... put it all back together push start and it will work... it worked for me ... really you need to reflow the gpu... green light means video yellow means cpu :-)

The gpu is coming away from the main board is the problem with mine :-)

hope this helps :-) i would say if you have it this far appart just change the thermo paste while your at it.....

post something on here if this helps you :-)

best thing about this fix is you dont blast it with heat to fix it...

If you use a small flathead screwdriver from a glasses repair kit ( make sure it's a flathead kit not a Philips screwdriver) it can replace the tork screwdriver.

it should be the hard drive , i had two ps3 the came in that would turn on fine except with no image or audio, the first one when i plugged the hdmi in it was extremly loose so i ruled it as the hdmi , it made sense that it would be the hdmi so i left it like that , the second one i had already worked on , it was having issues trying to format the hard drive and when it did it took a whole day, when the customer brought it back it was turnign no but with no image. so i thought to my self....hmmmm the hard drive was having problems before maybe if i test another one on there it could fix or make it better so i did and as soon as i installed a used one the video came on and i did had to format that hard drive and install an update but that got video and audio back on , thats not it , i got the first ps3 that i thought was the hdmi and i installed another used hard drive and got image on that ps3 again so wala

green light on and no video is a variation of the ylod

simply put follow the ylod repair instructions and you should be golden

this happen to me and thats how i fixed it

I had the same problem in my CECHE01, sometimes it would turn on, then randomly this snowy, interlaced garble and if you pushed down dead center, it would go away, the device was still frozen and must be force-restarted, but you could tell it wasn't set right... I torqued down the screws a little tighter than i probably should have, but it fixed it.

There is a thing called the green light of death and here's how I fixed mine

First flip your PS3 over there will be screws unscrew them then there is a black tab on one of them lift it up and unscrew that . In the front of it there will be black screws then you need to go to lows and ask for a t10 star torch (type of screwdriver head cheap) then once u get that then unscrew them then take off the lid and then clean your PS3 put screw the lid back on . I hope u get your PS3 running sagamore and good luck with it

My problem was with the video cable, I had the exact same symptoms and even if the PS3 DID turn on, it kept crashing. The bad cable was the AV-MULTI OUT and my theory is that the cable may have been short circuiting the PS3. I connected it via HDMI and have had no problems since!

My ps3 super slim 500gb model will plug in power cord and it lights up red then 30 sec later it will be and turn green(pushing on power button won't work) so it turns on. Fan won't work either. Then it turns off after a min or two. Wat caused this whole problem was I cut into the fan wires and was hooking up a fan controller and I think I fried something. Idk. Plzzzzzzz help!!!! I've tore it down to the mother board and nothing is wrong. The power supply looks great. Nothing swollen or anything. Changed out the fuse and nothing. Still does the same thing.

Bro open ur ps3 super slim mother board and apply some heat with heat gun on both cpu and gpu and the above ics and apply some thermal paste on cpu and gpu and fix it up and now power on !
