Desktop won't open up
Powers up but will not go to start page...the third light along next to the power indicator..looks like a tube / cylinder is flickering

I assume that you meant that there is no display. is this correct?
Do you get any display at all on startup, e.g. makers splash screen etc?
Connect an external monitor to the laptop and check if there is a desktop display showing on it.
What OS is installed in the laptop?
