I had this problem -- and found that the problem was with the pods themselves. At first, I assumed it was my coffee maker... after all, how can they screw up a K-cup?
I called Keurig tech support.... she walked me through cleaning out the needle, etc. But... the problem continued. She thought that maybe the machine was defective.
But, in the process, I noticed that the problem began with a new box of K-cups. With tech support still on the line, I checked my theory... yes... the problem only happened when I used pods from that box of Green Mountain Half-Caf.
Since the tech-support experience, I repeated it around a dozen times with that box (of 32 pods). The sludge only occurs with pods from that one box... but never with the others.
So, one piece of advice that might work--- If you get sludge, clean out the grounds by running a cup of plain water... and then, try a pod from a different box. I've had some problem-free Half-Caf boxes in the past, but that one box was a problem.

It appears that this is a result of soft water. If you have a water softener/conditioner, the grounds get gummed up. Even though our water goes through the softener then a purifier.
The grounds get “iodonized”.
I thought this was ridiculous but since I have used bottled water I have had no problems.

Additional note: I did have to clean the needles. I used a paper clip.
Even though I had only used it twice it was gummed up.

We have the same problem, grounds everywhere, we have a water softener. I run out water through a purifying pitcher, grounds every where!

I have the same problem but it only happens to the half calf green mountain. We replaced our older Keurig because of the problem with half calf with a new 2,0 and the same thing happens as the older Keurig. We tried a different box of Half Calf with a different lot number and it worked. It has to be the way they manufacturer the pods

This is ridiculous. I can't believe I spent a lot of money on my coffee maker only to be told I can't use my tap water. Now I have to buy water for this coffee maker? Where is the brilliant mind who designed it? Obviously not making coffee in a normal house. Are all Keurig coffee makers allergic to soft water or just this one?
