Why is there a folder with? blinking in the grey screen

I understand there are other posts that look similar.

I have a macbook pro that when I tried to boot it up it started flashing a folder with a ?. I have tried holding C when I restart it and nothing happens. I tried holding Cmd Alt P R and nothing happens. I tried reformatting the hard drive. Tried a different hard drive. I also tried using the compatible RAM that I have in my 17" MacBook Pro but nothing seems to work. I even tried removing the RAM and the lithium battery for a day to see if that would wipe out the password but it also didn't work. I also even tried installing the OS on the spare hard drive through my 17"Mac by removing the hard drive and installing the spare one and installing the OS on it; i hooked it back up to the 15" and the problem persists. And for some reason when I hold Alt it shows a lock with block to write the password but I don't know it and the original owner doesn't remember it either. But when I remove one of the sticks of RAM and hold the Alt button it shows the recovery CD, I double click on it and it goes to the gray apple screen and stays there.

ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Well you did a lot a things but it's hard to tell if they were done correctly or succeeded. Try this: hook the two up via firewire cable and start the 15" holding down the "T" key. Now from the 17", reformat the drive using the "write zeros" option. Now try installing a system.

Thanks for the recommendation but unfortunatley it didn't work. It did the same thing. Is there a battery mounted on the motherboard? and if I i remove that will it help?

It's time to find out what really happened to it before you got it. Open it up and inspect the Liquid Submersion Indicators. If they're red take it back to the seller and get your money back.

tarafından

Well I don't want to sound too much like a newbie lol but where exactly is the Liquid Submersion Indicators? well I have tried to talk to the owner but he changed his number. So I've been had; now my only option is to fix it myself. I was wondering if there is a CMOS battery in these MAcbook pros to take it off hopefully resetting it. Or if there are CMOS jumper pin to remove.

When i hold the Option button it shows a lock screen, but when i remove a stick of RAM it lets me choose the hard drive to boot from but when select it it goes to the grey apple screen and stays there.

I appreciate your time and help

Cesar,

The lock you're talking about is the firmware password. You'll need to find out how much RAM was in the machine when you got it... and replace the RAM with the same, exact amount of compatible RAM. That's the only way to reset the firmware password.

Once you have the password reset, you'll be able to boot to other drives and begin troubleshooting the issue more. If you can't get the password reset, you'll need to take it into an Apple Store or a repair center to have them do it.

You'll be able to find out a lot more about the situation when you can boot from an external and run some more tests.

Josh, you can access the machine once with ANY RAM change, you do not need to know the original amount. I usually zap the PRAM on the first startup.

tarafından

Are you saying it's a one-time-deal? I hadn't heard that before. Any time I've done it, it was for a customer who had no idea what to do. :) None of them had swapped the RAM before I touched it.

tarafından

Right, you can access once for each RAM change, but only once, then you have to change the RAM again.

tarafından

Ah, yeah... that makes perfect sense. It recreates the RAM cache every time you shut down. Would just need to toss different RAM into the machine (thinking out loud).
