Stability Traction Control System

What would cause the traction control to kick in when there isn't any wet or icy conditions?

Can I replace a sensor or module?

I do disengage this on my 2006 Yukon (a button on my console allows this), so that I can continue driving without it kicking on.

thank you, Jacqueline

Update

Great! Thanks ABCellars - I have an AutoZone around the corner. I'll get them to check it out - go from there.

Ryan and Mayer, thank you for your input - I'll do some digging in those areas as well!

You all have narrowed down my problem - we'll go from there - let you know what I find out! Have a good one! Jacqueline

Thank you Brian and ABCellars - I really appreciate your answers - thank you so much for taking the time.

I think I'll continue doing what I'm doing - keeping it off. Once I save up a truck load of cash - I'll take it in.

I assume my tires are not going to sieze up or fall off?! :o)

In direct answer to your question, it is doing what it was designed to do: That system is designed to react to your tires/wheels turning/rotating at a different rates than each other. During normal driving there are many times that the wheels on one side of the vehicle will rotate at a different rate than the other, such as going thru curves or turning. The electronic sensors to that system do not determine precipitation or temperature, only a variance in tire/wheel rotation. That is why they put the switch on your console. You, the driver, know the conditions you are driving in. If you are driving in normal conditions there is no need to have it on. You are doing what you are suppose to do by turning it off when the conditions won't require it and when you feel the conditions do need it by turning it on.

If there is something funny going on with the system that I did not get from the description you gave. Autozone and other auto parts stores do free diagnostic scanning for free, using the same scanner many mechanics use. That will save you the $25 -$50 the mechanic will charge to scan your vehicles computer for malfunctioning sensors etc...If there is a problem it should tell you with in reason what it is.

I have a 2004 GMC Yukon that the stability Control System is not working properly. When it is on the vehicle seems like it does not have any take off power then picks up and go on and there is a noise in the front end. With it off everything is fine no losing power or noise in front end. I took it to Auto Zone there are no codes.

Mine is doin da same but i get a code for a O2 sensor..

The 2006 GMC or Cadillac Yukon Denali has a recall, technical service bulletins (TSB) and safety reports about the stability control on the SUV.

Having the dealer check this TSB may solve the problem but if not they will most likely tell you what's wrong, hoping that you'll let them do the work.

I had an issue where my truck would loose power and not move from a dead stop, and my traction control light would come on. This posed a very dangerous situation when pulling out into traffic. After researching it I found it was a problem with the wheel sensors. Seems they become corroded. I had to remove the sensor from the hub and clean the hub with a wire brush at the sensor port. Then I sprayed it with anti corrosion spray and reassembled it. Have not had a problem again. There is a recall on this problem for previous years but not 2006, so the dealers are no help. FYI... I never had one diagnostic code the whole time this was happening. The dealer had my truck for a week and could not duplicate the problem, so I was left to my own on this one.

Rick: I have a 2004 Chevy Suburban with the same problem. The dealer as well as the GM online customer service rep told me there are no recalls on my vehicle and claimed to have no idea about this problem...yet there are a multitude of posts about it online. Do you happen to know where I can find information about the recall you mention above?

Thanks in advance.

Rick, would you hear a vacuum noise from the feet of the dash when this happened?

Ok I have tried over and over taken my vehicle to numerous places, I have a 2003 GMC Yukon, now when the engine is warm I hit a bump the door locks open and close, the engine bogs down, I cant get a straight answer and its not just me I see it on numerous sites, My wife was driving my kids to school and the car died almost causing her to wreck, I love this car but I cannot even consider selling with this issue. Can anyone help

Joseph Rogers, check the ground wires to the frame from the battery, to the engine from the frame and from the frame or engine to the body. It sounds like a bad ground connection to me. If the bolts are loose or the wires are damaged, it won’t have a good ground. If you have a multimeter, check each ground wire for resistance. Too much resistance will indicate the bad connection. Good luck.

Vince Rodriguez... I came on here because I did a search and this is what it led me to. I'm having the same problem with my 2004 Yukon XL. I change the wheel bearings I've changed the speed sensors but I do hear that vacuum type Sound by the Dashboard that you were just referencing in your reply to Rick.

you need to know for sure what the problem is before fixing it, knowing a good mechanic that can run a computer diagnostic on it first.

(ODBII computer error codes) and these codes would be the best thing to do first if they are any error codes to read. Sometimes the wheel bearings can go bad, which "might" make the computer think something is wrong........... so knowing someone skilled at diagnosing these issues would be best since the codes returned might not tell the entire story. Could be a wheel speed sensor. Might be something more expensive thou.......

Ive seen a bit of these where one or more of the abs rings are cracked or loose that will casuse a low speed engagement of the system. You need a scanner that can read all four wheel sensors ant the same time and check them.

good luck

Sometimes it can, especially if on the same axle.

A tire that is low on pressure has a smaller diameter than one that is over inflated or properly inflated causing the reading to be higher on that wheel more revolutions per mile
