Keyboard stopped working, trackpad works perfectly

Hey

I have got a problem. I was using my MacBook Pro Retina 13” Early 2015 as usually and then I closed the lid and connected the charger. When the notebook was charged, I opened it and it was a window to enter the password. The keyboard stopped working (except power on/off button), but the trackpad works great.

I tried to connect external usb keyboard (window's one) and do SMC and PRAM reset, but I think it doesn’t work with that keyboard. I tried about 50 times. I even did PRAM reset using terminal. I can’t go to the recovery or safe mode.

Please, help me!

Looks like a common case of the bad trackpad cable to me. I just fixed this on the computer i’m typing on now. Just order the cable, and follow Keyboard and trackpad don't work, loose cable? about the specific problem or this guide to swap the new cable in. Just make sure you have the correct screwdrivers and maybe a spudger too, and you should be good to go. Just make sure to expand and read the comments as many other subtle items from others can be helpful as well. Good luck and keep iFixing

Because your power on/off button still works, but the rest of your keyboard doesn't, I'm inclined to believe there is an issue in your trackpad(which has the logic board that runs the keyboard) or keyboard ribbon cable. Thankfully, these aren't super expensive fixes.

Connecting an external keyboard may give you the change to run an Internet Diagnostic. If you want to Option Boot, I believe on a Windows keyboard the "Alt" key is the Mac "Option" key.

Turn off your computer, then press and hold the "D" key while re-booting. If your MacBook is reporting a problem, you'll find it that way. You'll receive a reference code which you can lookup on Apple's website. However, I have found that many hardware issues are not reported.

Unfortunately, I think you may need to take a trip to an Apple Store or Apple repair shop.

I've been asked to try to troubleshoot/repair a Macbook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015). The keyboard does not work on the thing (except power on/off button) the power on/off button works perfectly besides that when i shutdown the device and try SMS it also works on my internal keyboard, the trackpad mouse does work as well. If I plug in a USB keyboard, that works. I bought and replaced a keyboard ribbon cable as that seems to be the most common issue causing this symptom, but it has not helped. I'm really not all that familiar at all with Macbook repair. I tried to connect external usb keyboard . and do SMC and PRAM reset but nothing has changed.

Anyone else have any ideas? I just hate to spend money on parts that may or may not fix the issue.

Seems many have this issue. Me too. But I got to find my issue to be a glitchy connection of the trackpad cable. So I have now added extra padding to the shield to make it firmly pressed towards the motherboard. And keyboard and trackpad is working once again.

So basically follow this guide

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzcBL1NB...

See the shield in the middle of the motherboard, That is the one that needs extra padding to press down (or up when you turn the computer around).

@Fredrik Borlie - Sadly the 13" model uses a different arrangement than the 15" model which is what the vid is about.

In this model the keyboard and trackpad cables are independent of each other. The more likely condition is a failing battery pressing on the keyboard ribbon cable.

@danj I was lucky then that my mbp 13" mid 2015 did have this config.

@fborlie - You then had a different series, not an early 2015 model. Review the guides.
