Advice on a component I knocked off

Hey i was hoping to get some advice, I accidentally knocked off the C0552 capacitor on an iPhone 6s when i tried unplugging a connector.. it was so small!

I wasnt originally attempting a board repair until this fell off so im worried that it might be something critical.

From what i see in the schematic its part of the “NORTH DC CURRENT BLOCKING CAPS” Screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/XIjDRMH

Thanks I appreciate all the help i can get, I’m interested to seeing what its function on the board is too :)

This capacitor is pretty easy to source; you can find them at DigiKey or Mouser. Soldering them is another story however as they are quite tiny.

That said, I don’t think it needs to be replaced. These four caps are there to filter out any noise on the the NORTH_AC_GND_SCREW line which is where the antenna interconnect resides. These caps are designed in to optimize performance when manufacturing tens of millions of devices. I would try to simply rebuild the device as is and see how it performs, If you don’t see a difference, then don’t bother with it.

Hey Jacob

You can replace the capacitor from a 3rd party vendor, and you will have to solder the new one back on. Im not sure who carries the capacitors for the Logic Board though. The easier route would probably be just to replace the Logic Board entirely. You can find a Logic Board for your iPhone 6s inexpensively to install so you don’t have to mess with soldering components or matching individual codes and specifications.

You can try Amazon or Newegg for the Logic Board, those two would have reasonable prices. For the capacitor I’m not sure who would sell it.

Good Luck!

I suppose i could find a water damaged iphone dirt cheap and see if it has a cap thats in good condition and pass it onto someone who can smd solder, I'm curious what the function of this cap is, do you know?

This capacitor is for a section of antenna's that are routed through the chassis on the northern bottom side. So it would be very difficult to solder it back on.

I would strongly suggest to replace the Logic Board itself, that would save you a ton of time and labor

Here’s board view for both sides of that cap.

Thankfully it’s not located in a terribly crowded spot on the board, but still very, very tiny. Unless you have much experience with micro soldering I’d say either get it repaired by a professional board level repair shop, or replace the logic board. the phone will likely function just fine without this capacitor (as @techstuff mentioned) but it is probably safer for the phone to replace it.

Exactly! better to be on the safer side rather than a dangerous side. Replacement would definitely prevent any danger such as shorts, fire, or iOS corruption.
