198000 mile camry concerns

I have purchased a 2001 Camry LE with a 2.2 L engine with 198000 miles on the clock for daily travel around town. What are some of the main areas of concern for maintenance?

Thank,

Hi @cd15 ,

Check for any leaks, i.e. oil leaks from engine, brake fluid from brake slave cylinders and master cylinder, transmission fluid, coolant etc.

Also if any smoke ,blue or white, emanating from exhaust - check oil levels in engine to see if using excess oil while normal running and if coolant levels stay normal

Brakes - check brakes have sufficient life left in disc pads and that discs are not worn down. If the rear brakes are drum brakes check the brake shoes for wear and also the brake drums are OK and not scored

Steering - check steering linkages etc. for wear

Tyres - check tyres for tread wear and wheel alignment.

Some things to be going on with ;-)

Thanks,

Which brand of motor oil would you recommend?

Which brand of transmission fluid would you recommend?

Hi @cd15 .

Most major brands are OK to use.

Use API grade SJ “Energy−Conserving”, SL “Energy−Conserving” or ILSAC multigrade engine oil. Recommended viscosity (SAE):

SAE 5W−30 is the best choice for your vehicle, for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather.

If you use SAE 10W−30 engine oil in extremely low temperatures, the engine may become difficult to start, so SAE 5W−30 engine oil is recommended

Not sure about the transmission fluid. You may have to contact a Toyota dealer and ask them if you have any concerns

Thanks again.

I appreciate the info

One last Question.

Should I be concerned about the timing belt?

tarafından

Ji @cd15 ,

Usually timing belts require a change every 100,000 - 160,000km, (60,000-100,000 miles) so if you don't know the history of yours, I recommend that you get it checked at least. Also get the tensioner and idler checked as well.

While your at it perhaps the coolant pump may need to be looked at as well, especially if the temp gauge runs a little above normal. It's not only the bearings that can go -usually you can hear this as the pump is noisy, but the impellers wear down or break reducing the coolant flow rate through the system.
