Why is my camera LED screen all black when I open the camera?

When i opened my camera to see if it was working properly yesterday, i noticed a black screen that wouldn’t go away, no matter what i did. Whether i took out my memory card and battery and put it back in, the black screen still showed up. I dont know what the problem is, and when i take pictures it shows nothing but black screen.

There’s no severe damage and i never dropped the camera so what’s causing this and why won’t it go away?

If i dont touch the camera for hours, it goes back to normal then the black screen comes back! Please help me!

Hi @amzad89 ,

When you say “…when i take pictures it shows nothing but black screen.” do you mean that the screen stays black but the pictures are OK when you download them to a computer? (I realise that you cannot see in the camera’s LCD screen what you are taking but that doesn’t mean that the camera is not taking a picture)

If the downloaded pictures are also just a black image then there is a problem with the CCD sensor or the motherboard or both in the camera.

If the downloaded pictures are OK then there is a problem with the LCD screen or perhaps the backlight power supply from the motherboard to the LCD screen. To test this, with the camera turned on and the LCD screen displaying a black screen try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen to check if you can “see” an image at all. It will be very faint if it is there, so try this in a darkened room to help see it.

If you can detect an image you have a backlight problem. It may be that the LCD screen’s backlight flex cable is loose or that the backlight has failed in the screen or that the motherboard backlight power supply circuit has a fault condition.

If you can’t detect an image at all the most likely the LCD screen is faulty or has a loose connection.

In any event the camera will have to be opened for the problem to be diagnosed.

I couldn’t find a guide or video for your model camera but here’s a video that shows how to replace the LCD screen in a Coolpix camera which may be of some help. At least enough for you to be able to inspect the flex cable connections or to replace the screen if you think it is the problem etc.

If you determine that the LCD screen is the problem, here’s a link to suppliers of the part.

Hopefully this is of some help.
