HDD replaced with an Samsung EVO 860 SSD, now what!?

I’ve just had a repairer replace my hard drive with a Samsung EVO 860 SSD, after my previous hard drive failed.

When I was getting the hard drive changed they wanted to charge me another $200 to set up my laptop, so I would like to try and do it myself.

I’m wondering if anyone can break it down for me in what I need to do please?

I backed up my laptop onto an external hard drive before getting the SSD fitted.

Thanks for any info anyone can share to allow me to do this!

Setup is pretty straightforward if your backup was done with time machine. If not yet done install the Os on the new drive, same or newer Os release of your backup must be installed, then open up Migration Assistant you find in Applications/Utility with your backup drive plugged in and restore all your user data/files with a few clicks, simply following the intuitive onscreen instructions. You just need a little patience and when ready the Mac will reboot with your newly restored OS, done !

Thank you so much for your instructions. You make it sound easy!! I really appreciate it! Currently flying home from USA but will give it a try and let you know how I get on :)

@christinacarter Sounds easy because it is, that's why we are on Macs after all, isn't it ? You're welcome, enjoy your flight and keep us posted :)

Did they replace the HD SATA cable? If not I do recommend you do that as often times you have the older cable which won't work well with the faster I/O data flows the SSD offers.

I would recommend setting up a OS installer thumb drive following this guide How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. And I recommend sticking with the older Sierra release as the newer High Sierra and Mojave releases will upgrade your SSD format from HFS+ to APFS. APFS has it's issues with older SATA based systems which is why I don't recommend it on this system.

If there’s Windows OS installed and ready to go left in that back-up (and you can start it from external hard drive) then you can use Acronis to transfer that back-uped Windows partition to 860 EVO. It’s almost straight forward since Acronis guides you on how to do what. If you need further details, comment here, I’ll answer as soon as possible.

Sorry, I’ve not posted on here before. When I set up my question I put in that it is a Mac book pro late 2011. I don’t know if you got to see that when my question posted. So it doesn’t have windows OS.

Any help you can provide to talk me thru setting it back up I’d be so grateful. :)

@christinacarter Your machine can run both Mac and Windows and will boot from either system.
