Replace the clockspring in the steering column ASAP.
Messing around with an airbag means there is a finite, but small, chance that it blows up in your face.
You could…. just saying. Move the steering wheel to where the light just turns on. Disconnect the steering column (one bolt under the hood) and turn the steering wheel back 1 full turn and reconnect everything (that one bolt).
I assume any buttons on the steering works? On my ‘01 I have stereo and cruise control on the wheel itself.
